More specifically espresso. Yes, yes this was happening. She never had it in her life, for some strange reason April and the pack wouldn’t allow it. It wasn’t like Emma was going to explode. The world around her might, but you know that was inevitable with or without espresso. She made her way to the diner and quickly found her way to the counter. Emma made sure to go straight for the counter; her plan was to order it to go. That way she can make a quick exit and not get caught by one of her pack members. The girl wanted to try the drink; she saw nothing wrong with it. And all the commercials made it sound appealing, plus Emma really liked trying new things. Her attention span required her to try new things, due to its shortness. She flagged down a waitress at the counter, glancing swiftly around. There was no sign of April anywhere…or Nash…or Matt. In reality Emma wasn’t really scared of the boys, it was April she was more concerned about. April was scary and Emma would listen to her without a problem. Matt and Nash did not have this effect on her. Unless Matt used that crazy alpha power, then he would. But Emma would be royally pissed at him.
Anger wasn’t an emotion that Emma felt on a regular basis, unlike Nash and April…and technically Matt. So Em cannot ramble about what her exact reaction would be because she does not know it. All she knows is that anger is a rare feeling for her that isn’t pleasant and she would rather not feel it. Emma quickly placed her order and basically rambled on about her situation and the urgency of the espresso. It only took a couple minutes but Emma was still jumping up and down impatiently. The girl quickly thanked the worker, threw money down on the counter, and grabbed the espresso. Pausing momentarily, she inhaled the sweet smell. Just the smell made her head buzz quickly with excitement. She quickly took a sip and paused. It was like the whole world froze around her. Her mind stopped its buzzing and Emma felt her eyes go wide. Then seconds later everything in her mind was being fast forwarded beyond belief. The little squirrels in her head that normally file information in her brain were now running around, throwing papers in the air. One of them was even ripping their shirt off and squeaking loudly. Emma felt her hands shake uncontrollably as well spun around in circles. Yes, people did stare but she didn’t care.
Em stopped spinning and began skipping out the restaurant. She was going so fast, and her vision was blurred slightly, that she didn’t see the boy walking right in her path. She bumped into him and screamed in fright, dramatically throwing her drink out of her hand and all over the man that she ran into. “My espresso!!” She screamed and then she realized the mess she made on the man. “Oh my god, I’m so, so sorry! I was spinning and skipping and jumping and my vision was a little out of it. I guess that’s what happens when one drinks espresso such as me. But that’s not an excuse! I’m terribly sorry! I’ll…I’ll…I’ll buy you lunch. Or would it be dinner since it is 3. Lunner? Dinch? Something like that. You would think that people would make a word for the meal in between dinner and lunch. They made one from breakfast and lunch. But anyways that’s not the point! I’m buying you food, and helping you clean up!” Emma had never rambled that much and that fast before in her life. She didn’t even realize her attention span could get that shorter. Without much thought, she grabbed the man’s hand and led him quickly a table. Stealing napkins off of the tables in between the door and the chosen table. “Here, use these!” She thrust the large handful of napkins at the stranger.

Okay, so, Luke had quickly learned that Washington was home of three things. Trees, rain, and squirrels. Yes, squirrels. Hyperactive rats with tails. Luke had thought squirrels were pretty common in California, but since moving northward with his sister he discovered a new meaning to that word. They were everywhere. And they’d evolved to the point that rather than being afraid of humans, they just kind of followed them around in a creepy squirrel-stalker-ish way. Yanno, you’d walk, they’d walk, you’d stop, they’d stare at you with a face that said ‘give me what I want or I will claw your eyes out in your sleep’. But anyway, enough about squirrels. There were enough of those in Emma’s head. Luke was currently walking (despite the risk of squirrel assault) to the nearest diner. One of the good things about living in Forks was that everything was pretty much in walking distance. And that was good because the twins only had one car and Quinn had taken it to go somewhere which Phips does not know and therefor will not explain. Luke hadn’t planned on going out today, until he’d gotten hungry, and being the two responsible adults they were they had almost nothing edible in the house.
Luke had gotten a lot better at knowing where things were and not getting lost all that often and so he hadn’t been paying much attention to where he was going, especially once he got close to the diner. Apparently, he wasn’t the only one who decided that looking in front of them was for squares. Luke didn’t even notice the skipping, brown-haired girl until they’d walked into each other. The two of them collided and before Luke could apologize or even really realize what just happened the girl was screaming and throwing her nearly full cup of hot coffee.. which of course spilled all over him. Again, Luke did not have a chance to so much as open his mouth because as soon as they girl realized what she’d done she started rambling an apology (and plenty of other things but I’m not going to fill up this paragraph talking about an expresso-high Emma’s ADD). ”Seriously, it’s alright - don’t worry about it. No harm done.” he said as soon as he could get a word in. Luke was an easy going guy. So he had expresso on his shirt. So what? That was what washing machines were for. The shirt hasn’t costed more than ten dollars and it wasn’t like anyone had gotten hurt. He and Quinn were pretty reckless and messy as kids (okay they still were), so this really wans’t a big deal to him. "Actually you saved me the trouble of buying my own coffee." He smirked. I mean, he was totally alert now.
”I'm guessing you’re not much of a coffee person, huh?” he asked, laughing a little to make sure it was obvious he was only kidding around. That was his natural reaction in these kinds of situations. Diffuse the tension. Besides that, Luke joked around about everything. It was just who he was. Some people appreciated it and some people didn’t but he was far too old to change. And it wasn’t like what he’d said had been meant as an insult. I mean, some people needed coffee to make them more exciting. But if a few sips of espresso made her that jumpy, Luke could only imagine what she was like on a normal day. Anyway, he really didn’t think it was necessary she bought him food, but she seemed pretty dead set on it regardless of what he said. If that wasn’t obvious by his being dragged to a table. ”Linner, maybe? Dinch kind of sounds a type of bird… Wait that’s a finch.” Yes, the name of the meal between lunch and dinner was a serious conversation they were having. ”It is pretty weird they don’t have a name for it.” Emma grabbed napkins off of a few tables and it was pretty obvious the two of them had made a big scene before they finally sat down. ”Thanks,” he took the napkins and wiped the liquid that was still dripping of his arms and chin. ”I’m Luke, by the way.”

I just spilled scolding coffee on you! How are you okay with that?! Unless you’re a---” Emma’s mental squirrels stopped running around in her head for a moment and froze temporarily. It was enough time for Emma’s sense to kick back in for a few minutes and the smell of a shifter hit her nose. “Oh my god! You’re a…! That’s so cool! So am I!! Wow, I have yet to meet someone outside my group like me! That’s awesome! Are there more of you? Are they nice? Do you live here? Of course you live how else would you know about this diner. Of course you could just be passing through and noticed a diner and wanted to eat. It’s silly of me to assume things about you, I’m sorry!” And the espresso filled squirrels were back in her head again. Running around, throwing papers, and screaming. Really it was any wonder Emma was standing still at this point. Okay she wasn’t really standing, she was sitting in a booth. And she wasn’t sitting still that’s for sure; she kept switching from shaking her leg to bouncing up and down. And this was her on just one sip of espresso. She didn’t get to finish it or have another sip. This was one sip. It was no longer a mystery as to why her pack never lets her have sugar or caffeine.
Emma glanced up and tried to flag down a waitress frantically. But of course most of them were avoiding eye contact with her. Obviously it didn’t take a person to know Emma to know talking to her with espresso in her system was a terrible idea. “Did you want coffee?? I’ll buy you some coffee along with your meal! As soon as someone comes to our table.” Emma was pretty obliviously to the fact that the servers were playing rock-paper-scissors to see who would have to deal with her. Emma didn’t think she was that bad. Honestly though, Em thought she was pretty tolerable. After all Nash and Matt dealt with her every day and they seemed perfectly fine with it. Of course there was April who hated Emma for no reason whatsoever. Truly, Emma did not understand what she did to her sister to have her hate her so much. It was like as soon as Emma came out of the womb April decided to loathe her sister no matter what. Given the chance April would gladly hand Emma over to someone else. Hence why Emma was making arrangements for Nash to adopt her and for her to move in with him. At least he didn’t hate her.
“This is actually my first time having it so by this reaction I would have to agree with you. My friends never let me have anything with sugar or caffeine in it. I don’t understand why. It makes me more alert and friendly. Though I’m always friendly so don’t worry about me possibly having a female mood swing. No, that’s my mean sister. I can never keep up with her mood swings, it’s like she’s on her period 24/7. Oh! Don’t tell her I said that!” Emma waved her hands frantically. It wasn’t like this stranger knew April. He seemed to relax to know April. Emma had met the people that were friends with April. They were mean and moody like she was. He didn’t seem that way, but still Emma had to make sure. Wouldn’t want April to find out what she said and give her more of a reason to be mean to her when she got home. But it was true. When Emma witnessed April it was like she was on her period ALL the time. Always cranky, mean, and moody. “Well we can name it now and hope it catches on! We can go with Linner since you like that one.” This was happening. Em was going to have this catch on someway somehow. If she posted it enough times on the internet it would surely get out. Well get out in her generation. Anybody older than thirty was pretty much out of reach. But that’s okay, it wasn’t like Emma talked or hung out with any thirty year olds. Emma watched anxiously as Luke cleaned himself off. “Emma!” she introduced herself happily and proudly. Now he knew her name and she knew is. Yup he wasn’t getting out of this any time soon.

Oh. Yeah. Right. Normal people probably would have had a problem enduring the temperature of the coffee that Luke had had spilled all over him. Um… oops. ”Oh my god! You’re a..!” Yeeaaaa. Of course though, for her to know.. All of a sudden he caught on to the scent.. And then she confirmed his suspicions. ”Stop saying sorry!” Seriously, it was like the girl had a guilty conscious. That would have been concerning had Luke been a more paranoid person.. or had the girl looked like she was capable of killing a fly. She clearly didn’t though. The only thing she was guilty of was getting extremely high on a sip of caffeine. ”Yeah, I live here. With my sister. She’s a shifter too. Nice.. ha, matter of opinion. No really, she is though. She’s just got social issues. We actually haven’t lived here that long, but it’s a small town and there aren’t many places to get edible food so.. “ Yeah, that was his explanation for what he was doing there. Really, he was practically as excited as she was. Luke liked meeting new people, but meeting new shifters (especially generally pleasant ones) was always awesome. ”Are you part of that.. girl group, or the other one.. I always get them mixed up. Apparently there’s a ton of us here. I’ve only met a few though.” The idea that there were other shifters besides just the packs that him and Quinn knew about wasn’t one that had crossed Luke’s mind. Being the unorthodox rebels they were their knowledge on pack life was pretty limited.
”Did you want coffee?? I’ll buy you some along with your meal!” Okay, so, Luke knew that that wasn’t a good idea. One coffee-high crazy shifter was enough for the small Forks diner… But lets face it, the guy was not known for being sensible and making good choices. ”Coffee sounds great.” he agreed, glancing up to where the servers were eying their table uncomfortably. Okay, so, Emma was kind of off the wall. Really, maybe it was just because Luke was weird himself, but he didn’t havev a problem with it. In fact, he thought she was very funny and entertaining. And the fact she was a shifter was just an added bonus. Rolling his eyes towards the waitress that was heading towards them he looked back at Emma. ”I’ll order. Do you want anything? You’re not driving home, right? You should probably get yourself a water or something before you leave.” Yeah, he was more joking around than actually offering helpful advice because the whole ‘water induces soberness’ thing was just a myth anyway… although he did like Emma and he didn’t want to see her dead so he was going to keep her away from heavy machinery and other dangerous things for a little while. That part he was serious about.
”Don’t worry, your secret’s safe with me.” Luke assured, in his typical good-humored fashion. As far as he knew, he’d never met the girl’s sister, although who knows, he could have seen her around.. maybe tomorrow she’d come to the diner and spill coffee on him or something. Although from the way Emme was describing her she seemed like the type of person who would just blame him and walk out the door. It was hard to get how bad the girl was from what her sister said because Luke was obnoxious and offensive when talking about Quinn, but the two of them were tighter than anything. He didn’t mean it. Could Quinn be moody? Yeah. But she could also be hilarious and awesome and loads of other good things. She usually was. ”Well we can name it now and hope it catches on!” ”I’ll spread the word.” Linner.. Seriously, Luke didn’t get how someone hadn’t coined that one already. Oh well, maybe in a hundred years they’d have their names in some text book or dictionary or something, next to the word they invented because it’s used in regular conversation. It would be awesome if that could happen sooner (Luke kind of wanted to be alive to enjoy his fame) but it sounded pretty cool either way. Luke grinned after her introduction. ”Well Emma, what are the chances I’ll be able to convince you to let me pay for my own meal?”

Emma couldn’t help up be extremely excited and further her hyper-ness by this new discovery. “I can try, I can’t promise anything though. Apologizing is like second nature for me. Well, being a wolf is second nature and then rambling. Okay so it’s like FOURTH nature to me. If there is such thing!” Yes she was using random hand gestures and facial expressions during this small rant. So just think of her as a child that just had their first taste of sugar, really that’s how she was acting. If it wasn’t clear in the other posts before this. And yes the squirrels were still actively running around in her head. That wasn’t going to stop any time soon either. There were more from where he came from! “Social issues? Well I guess that could cause a problem in whether someone thinks she’s nice or not. But I’m sure that she’s very nice! And oh, where you guys from? Did you move here from some foreign place? Like California or New York? Why did you move here? Were you guys just passing by? How long are you planning on staying here? It would be really cool if you could meet my other pack members. They are amazing! Well I guess it’s a matter of opinion like you said. But I think they are amazing!” Yes, that just happened. Emma wanted to know everything about the man. And the caffeine in her system made her have less of a filter than she normal had. So that meant…well I’m not sure what that entailed. But clearly that made Emma just keep talking and asking questions that a normal person wouldn’t ask a normal stranger when they first meet. Of course Em would apologize to him for being so blunt but you know, he told her to stop. And just the fact that she is listening and censoring that much from her statements was a huge accomplishment for her.
And as far as her pack went they were amazing people. Well April wasn’t but she doesn’t matter anymore apparently. But Nash was awesome! He was like her older brother, actually Emma was pretty sure some adoption was in the process of being made. The two surprisingly had a lot in common and for the most part agreed with each other on a daily basis. Despite their almost polar opposite personalities. And then there was Matt, her boyfriend…still weird to say, I don’t know why. He was spastic like her and paranoid. But really nice and always treated her with respect that other people seemed to lack. Not to mention he was the one that took charge of teaching her drive. Also she was dating him so yea there was that too. “Girl group?” Emma paused in her internal implosion to think about the question. “No, the only girls in my group are me and my sister. And she isn’t really with our group any more, I think. I don’t know one minute she was there and the next she was gone.” Emma wasn’t sure what other group Luke was talking about but she assumed it was the group that Matt had mentioned when they first moved there. The same one she had read about in lore, of course she should have known they existed. She existed after all. “You mean the Quillettes? Oh no, it’s just the four of us, well three now. We moved here a little while ago but still technically new. You met more of us?! You are the only one I have met outside of Matt and Nash, my pack mates. That’s so exciting! But I can see how you would get confused. I wonder how that girl group even functioned. I could barely stand living with my sister but a whole girl group. That’s a lot of estrogen for such a tiny area. I should really warn the others about that one. Wouldn’t want them to scorn any of them or do something stupid.” For the record Luke brought this upon himself. He’s the one that asked the question. Though in his defense he did not know they would open the flood gates of Emma’s mouth up. And now he did.
“Yay! More coffee!” Yes, they both should have known it wasn’t a good idea for more of that stuff to be near them. But you know, they weren’t really thinking straight. Okay well Emma wasn’t really thinking straight. She was thinking in the circles that the squirrels were currently running in. So her mind was not capable of making sound and logical decisions like she normally does. Of course when it comes to caffeine and sugar Emma chose to ignore logic for once in her life. It wasn’t like Nash and Matt were around to stop her or anything, and clearly this guy was going to join in on the fun. So it was all good! “Oh, um, just another espresso if you don’t mind! And maybe some fries! And no, I’m not. I don’t know how to drive. Well I technically know how to thanks to YouTube but I don’t have a license and haven’t had enough actual experience by the wheel to by qualified to even take the test. So says the state of Washington.” Yea, um, the state of Washington was being very smart about that. Emma shouldn’t have a license until she drove around for at least a year. And really more than Matt should be able to sign her off on it. Not calling out Matt’s capabilities but seriously he wasn’t that much older than her. “Water? Oh that won’t help.” Yea that was a no on that front. “But thank you for being helpful. I’m so glad I spilled by espresso on you. Well not glad about that part but I’m glad that it was you and not some cranky person.” Yea if it had been anyone like April or you know, Serena, oh yea that would not have ended well at all. Then again if it was Serena, Emma would probably no longer be a virgin if it was her. Just saying. So in conclusion Emma and Serena should never meet because Emma is not pure like Tegan but she’s close to it. And well as Arthur knows, you should never kill a unicorn.
Emma grinned at Luke, glad that he wouldn’t go and tell April all the nasty things she said about her. Of course that would require for the two of them to meet. And that’s kind of impossible at this point. Not because April has social issues but because as far as Emma knew she was no longer with them. She wasn’t dead, hopefully. That would be depressing and not something Em would be able to handle well. “Awesome! Maybe we will be famous and rich one day! Oh, what would do with a lot of money? I’m not sure what I would do. Part of me wants to do the responsible thing but that isn’t really fun. Not to mention my pack mates would probably discourage such responsible behavior.” Okay if their pack had millions and millions of dollars, the two guys would probably not spend in lightly. Let’s be perfectly honest with that one. Emma actually might since you know she has logical thinking and Ally’s characters have to be the mothers of the group. Even though they don’t appear that way or act like it all the damn time. Bridgette and Emma being perfect examples of that. And Gwen. And Kate. And Quinn. And…well no not Serena, she isn’t the motherly type in the least. “Slim to none,” Emma stated with a definite tone. “I will tackle you if you even think about paying for yourself. I may be small but assure you I can pack a punch when I need to. I have been in a bar fight, you know.” Yes, she was completely joking about this. Well not the bar fight part of the packing a punch thing. But she wouldn’t actually ta---okay yea, she would. In this state of mind Emma totally would. He’s not paying end of story. And clearly this is all good nature and not Bridgette/Gwen angry threat. She smiled sweetly and apologetically at him.
