”Uh, wow, that sucks.” He shrugged. ”Must have been worse for the people who had to see it. I figure they’re probably getting therapy now.” It was sort of a joke, but at the same time, he sure as hell would have been concerned about his sanity had one of the guys suddenly turned into a giant wolf during a training mission. Assuming he even believed what he was seeing. Nash had tried to get out of there as fast as he could, but there’d been some panicking before that kind of logic set in. And it wasn’t like that stopped when he learned how to phase back. ”I was annoyed at first but I guess I figured, most guy’d probably be pretty grateful for an excuse not to get shot at in another country.” Didn’t mean he wouldn’t go back if given the opportunity. ”Maybe you’ll get another chance in a few years.” ”Yeah, maybe.. I’m not counting on it though. The disappearing act I pulled wasn’t exactly protocol.” He’d need a hell of an explanation and then some to even get his name cleared and being the realist that he was, he knew that going back wasn’t ever going to be an option.
Finding out Matt was seventeen should have made it a little easier to digest him living by himself (I mean, Nash had been when he was a year older) but still, the kid just seemed young. ”How old are you anyway?””Twenty one.” By all counts he was legal to do what he wanted, but well, the whole thing had been a lot more exciting when it was just a fantasty in his like fifteen year old mind. ”Yea, I get it. So does living alone>” It was pretty clear after talking to Matt for a while that different as the two of them seemed, they had at least a couple of things in common (aside from the whole shifting/mind reading thing they figured out very early in the thread). ”If we let them stay, after a while they’ll be all over the place and to be blunt that’d mean a lot of people dead.” Right, because they were vampires. Yeah, okay, so they’d been talking about them for a while, but it hadn’t really clicked for Nash to associate the name with the… blood sucking people killing.. thing that happened in old horror movies. ”And we hafta do it because…no one else can. We’re the population control.” Of course they were. ”Sounds like a fun job.”

Must have been worse for the people who had to see it. I figure they’re probably getting therapy now. Matt had never thought about that—he’d phased in the company of people who were familiar with it. Imagining himself as a person who had no idea… he realized that that had to have been unbelievable. ”Damn… did a lot of people see you?” Not that it was something very easy to miss or that Nash had time to turn around and count how many witnesses there were, but Matt was curious. I was annoyed at first but I guess I figured, most guys’d probably be pretty grateful for an excuse not to get shot at in another country. Had Matt known the guy better, he’d have slipped in a comment about how now he was just going to get attacked by vampires and that this deal wasn’t much better but he kept that to himself. Especially because that comment, along with Nash’s next one, showed that he had wanted to be there and it wasn’t fair that he couldn’t… but that was how it was. ”I guess you have a good way to take any anger out,” he mentioned, grinning a little. Any frustration Nash may have had over the whole thing could easily be channeled into killing vampires… if they ever even ran into one.
Twenty one. That seemed a lot more realistic than Matt being seventeen with the guy living on his own and being all independent and everything. It also kind of made Matt wonder how well he was going to take to being under the authority of two kids younger than him until he started thinking about something. ”Do you happen to remember when it happened? Like… the exact day.” Because what Nash needed right now was to learn more weird shifter things but hey Matt was still pretty damn curious how this all was going to work out. Sounds like a fun job. Matt chuckled. It did sound kind of horrible. ”It’s not that bad. I think it’d be worse if you dealt with it on your own.” It’d really suck if Nash decided to move on and be a shifter and all that fun stuff by himself. Otherwise, they could deal with it together.

”Damn… did a lot of people see you?” ”Probably around a dozen.” He obviously hadn’t had the time or the head on him to check how many people were around or how they were reacting to what they saw. I mean, hehadn’t even know what they were seeing. It wasn’t until later that he managed to check out what exactly he could do and get a look at himself in a mirror. ”I’m guessing that’s not something we’re supposed to make a habit out of.” Yeah this isn’t like Harry Potter where there was a whole group of people dedicated to erasing memories after people see things they shouldn’t. Not that there was anyone telling him that this had to be kept a secret. I mean, if there were rules, the fact that nobody had come and cleared them up made Nash pretty confident that he didn’t have to follow them. (Which was one thing that made this a lot better than the army.) Still, he figured if people wanted the word out there.. well they knew how to use the internet.
”I guess you have a good way to take any anger out.” ”You’re pretty optimistic about this whole thing, huh?” I mean, Nash wasn’t bitter or complaining or anything, but he still didn’t see a whole lot of positives in turning into an animal and being expected to save people with no credit. (Obviously, he wasn’t Blake and didn’t appreciate being batman.) ”Do you happen to remember when it happened? Like… the exact day.” Yeah, at this point the shifter stuff was kind of getting overwhelming but honestly Nash would rather find out everything now than wait for it to come up later when he needed it. He tried to remember the day of the week and what they were doing. ”It was just over a month ago... On the third… Why?” And then Matt went all optimist again with his ”It’s not that bad. I think it’d be worse if you dealt with it on your own.” ”So I guess you still think I should stick around here?” he asked, grinning back a little. Yeah, at this point, nuts as it sounded, he’d pretty much resigned that it was going to happen, because it was the most logical decision he could make all things considered.

Probably around a dozen. I’m guessing that’s not something we’re supposed to make a habit out of. That was pretty much a given even though there wasn’t really an official rule for it or anything. ”Yeaaa—that one you couldn’t help… but we try to keep it hidden. I figure it’d be pretty annoying for people to know. They wouldn’t get it.” No normal people would understand it and there were so many possibilities for the outcome of someone finding out about them and they were pretty much all very negative. Matt could stay optimistic about the situation as long as nobody found out about it. If someone found out, though, there was no making them ‘unsee’ it. You’re pretty optimistic about this whole thing, huh? Matt laughed a little. Yea, he was now. ”I wasn’t always but I guess I don’t wanna sit around being miserable about it.” He had a lot to be miserable about but that wasn’t going to get him anywhere.
Well the next thing Nash was about to find out could either make him more optimistic or sort of freaked out but he’d learned a lot already so he could handle a little bit more. It was better to get it done all at once. Matt grinned when Nash answered the question, nodding. It was just over a month ago… On the third… ”You’re sure?” That was right between Matt and April. Why? ”You phased second… that makes you beta. If you decided to stay, you’d have authority over the other two pack members—you can give them orders they can’t resist. I’m sort of Alpha… so you can’t do it to me… but I’ve never tried it.” Matt hadn’t really been phased long enough to have needed to use the Alpha command but even after a while he didn’t see himself using it unless he really needed to, and he couldn’t even think of a circumstance in which he would. ”Sorry, I’m pretty sure that’s everything you need to know about shifters.” He didn’t want the guy to think he was holding back information—he just didn’t think of it all at once.
So I guess you still think I should stick around here? ”Yea, I really do. And not just because I can’t survive this much longer with two girls.”

”Yeaaa—that one you couldn’t help… but we try to keep it hidden. I figure it’d be pretty annoying for people to know. They wouldn’t get it.” Nash nodded. Okay, secret. He got it. He could do that. I mean.. it wasn’t exactly like he had anyone to tell anyway. The fact that he’d basically ditched his old life really made adjusting to this one a lot easier. And like Matt, he wasn’t really looking to sit around and dwell on the shitty parts. ”I wasn’t always but I guess I don’t wanna sit around being miserable about it.” ”It’s a good attitude.” Even though Matt looked fifteen, he didn’t seem immature. (Nash would obviously learn better later.) And it seemed like this was someone he could spend time around, which was going to influence his decisions later in this post that I’m basically just stalling until I get to right now because yanno..legnth, it’s needed.
”You sure?” ”Yeah, I’m sure..” he replied after thinking about it again. And then he found out why Matt wanted to know and he couldn’t help shaking his head again. Alphas.. betas.. again, it was starting to sound less like some freaky genetics and more like they’d just landed straight in some fantasy series (which they had but shush) ”Seriously?” he asked. You’d think after the mind reading and all the other weird stuff that would take a books worth of space to write out and I’m not going to do that since we’ve gone over it all already Nash would just accept what Matt was saying but.. c’mon, it was pretty incredible. ”You’re saying if you told me to do something right now, I would just.. feel all compelled to do it?” Thinking it over, he had an idea. I mean, Matt had never done it before and Nash wanted to know how to worked. There seemed like a pretty simple solution. ”Wanna try it out?”
Basically, he’d already made the big decision. Yeah, Nash didn’t like the idea of some kid having the ability to force him to do things. Hell, anyone he didn’t know having that ability on him was kind of freaky to think about. But he trusted the kid. He wouldn’t have let him try the freaky mind control if he didn’t. And if they were going that far with their relationship, Nash wasn’t just going to leave him with a bunch of girls (because lets face it, their lives were full of enough problems adding that one was just unfair) He chuckled. ”Hey. You’ve got my respect for making it this long. Yanno what- I’m in.”

Matt grinned a little thinking about Nash being in charged of April. Emma would prefer that for sure because being under April’s command just couldn’t be too much fun. They hadn’t had much time to test that stuff but now they’d know that April wasn’t going to get the chance to try it out. You’re saying if you told me to do something right now, I would just… feel all compelled to do it? Matt nodded with uncertainty. ”Supposedly… If I wanted you to.” Matt could give orders and they could be completely empty—it depended on whether or not he wanted to be forceful about it. He was being careful however because being told by a stranger that you didn’t have free will just wasn’t a pleasant thought and Matt didn’t want the guy to think he’d abuse the ability. Then again Nash seemed pretty cool about the idea considering he was now outright allowing it. Wanna try it out? ”What?” The suggestion had taken Matt aback. ”Really?” He asked for confirmation before giving it a shot. He wasn’t even sure he knew how to do it. He thought for a moment before giving a command as if he really wanted Nash to do it. ”Back up—against that tree. Don’t move from that spot.” He’d known he could do it for a while but actually doing it was a whole other experience.
He’d have expected that after being forced to do something, the guy would have chosen to walk away from it. Though he must have had his own reasons for being able to drop any prior plans he’d had because he agreed to stay. This made Matt pretty excited and now they could make fun of April and Emma together and it wasn’t two against one anymore and he basically only had positive thoughts coming into his head regarding the other guy being around. He probably should have been more cautious just out of not knowing him, but that’s where we’re reminded that the guy was only seventeen. He wasn’t always thinking about the worst that could come out of a situation unless it involved vampires (everyone had their obsession). Anyway, it was easy to tell Matt was very happy about Nash’s decision. ”Okay—I’ll have to show you where we’re allowed to be and what we do for fun around here and where you could camp…okay well we’re allowed anywhere we want but we can only phase in certain places or people get all temperamental.” Matt had only just recently gotten to the area anyway so he was still figuring shit out but he could at least give Nash a general idea and they’d have to figure everything else out together. ”So you were like… trained and stuff? For the army, I mean. You’re fast, then? Strong, I bet.” He was just curious—not about how well Nash could kill a vampire but more how competitive they could be with each other.

”Supposedly… If I wanted you too.” ”But you’ve never done it before?” Nash figured if he’d planned on abusing it he’d had plenty of time to at least figure out how it worked. The fact he hadn’t said that there really wasn’t much a practical reason for the ability (okay, like, not that there was anything practical about any of this but still) but that didn’t make him any less curious about it. It might have sounded weird that he was asking to experience it, but it was better he did under his own terms than if it ever happened for any other reason. So, completely strategic here, really, when you thought about it like Nash did…which.. lets be real most people don’t. But Nash thought it was logical and couldn’t help be amused by the younger guy’s surprise. ”What? Really?” ”Yeah.. I figure we both want to see how it works and there aren’t many other people to try it on… Go ahead. Just don’t make it stupid.” Obviously, if Matt abused it to get Nash to do something horrible Nash would be high tailing it out of there without a second thought and Matt also would have gotten the shit beaten out of him.. but the kid knew well enough to go for something simple and Nash was both really interested and kind of surprised when despite some serious attempt at resisting, he ended up walking backwards towards the tree behind him and being all but stuck to the spot. ”You were right. That’s a hell of a trick.” Yeup, it was neat and powerful and hopefully Matt enjoyed himself because he was never going to be allowed to do it again.
Matt was obviously really excited by Nash’s decision to stay which was made obvious by the rant which I’m not going to be obnoxious and quote here. For the most part, he was going way too fast about way too many things Nash didn’t understand but the guy did get that there were only so many explanations that could be given in a day and as long as it wasn’t something super important or life threatening, Nash could hold off on questions like where, what people, and why would being there piss them off. (Not to mention this whole thing was starting to feel like they were in kindergarten again which was basically the only time when it was acceptable to meet new people and decide you’re going to be best friends and know everything about each other and initiate the new kid into your clique and I mean that’s obviously not what they were doing but after being alone for like a pretty long time due to the whole randomly turning into a werewolf thing (yes I know they’re not werewolfs but this is Nash narration and Nash doesn’t read enough fantasy books to know or care that a shifter and a werewolf are too different things) Nash kind of appreciated the whole acceptance thing.) ”Slow down.” he grinned. ”Alright- it sounds good.” I mean, despite not liking being told to do things and not knowing why they were doing them, Nash figured it was too early to go around and make enemies so he’d just have to lie low and listen to Matt for a while. ”So you were like.. trained and stuff? For the army, I mean. You’re fast, then? Strong, I bet.” He shrugged. Nash didn’t think he was amazing or anything, but he hadn’t had any problems getting through the various training levels and then you can add another two years of experiance Matt just needs to stop with the competitive thing before it starts because we know it’s just going to make him feel horrible about himself in life xD ”Yeah, I guess. I can hold my own.”

Despite his better judgment telling him not to do it, Matt told the guy to do something. It was simple and pointless but this older, stronger guy had no choice but to do it. The younger guy watched with genuine surprise as Nash did what he’d said, backing into the tree. You were right. That’s a hell of a trick. ”You did that on purpose,” he said in disbelief though he had no reason to doubt it had actually worked. ”Uh, thanks… really got rid of some curiosity there. I was wondering… but I wouldn’t just use it for nothing… I don’t even know what I would use it for.” He appreciated the guy just sort of letting him do it even though he didn’t need permission for it. They’d just met not long ago so it was kind of a big deal. ”Anyway… you can do it too… with April and Emma. They just don’t know it yet.” He climbed into a branch in a tree then because Tilly characters do that on a regular basis… before sort of looking at Nash and mentally face palming himself. ”Oh! Sorry, you can move.”
Slow down. Alright- it sounds good. Matt grinned as well, though slowing down wasn’t going to be easy at the moment. ”Right…sorry… again… If you think I’m bad—wait ‘till you meet Emma.” Riighhtt… Emma and April…the people who had yet to find out Nash was not part of the pack. Whatever…they’d find out later. ”She’s like me but on like four cans of soda all the time. And April’s… not Emma.” It was kind of hard for him not to talk about those two because they were literally the only people Matt ever hung out with since the whole phasing thing happened. ”If you ever need to you can stay on the couch in my house or something. Sometimes the electricity gets shut down but it’s still a little better if it’s like…storming or something.” The more he thought about how he was inviting a stranger into his house the more he felt like he just sounded like a freak. ”Is that weird? I hope that’s not weird.” And then…subject change. ”You wanna show me?” He asked with a grin—Matt liked competition. ”Race back to your place?”

”You did that on purpose.” Nash shook his head, feet still planted on the ground in front of the tree despite his attempt to move. ”Swear on my life.” Despite what Matt said, Nash didn’t really think it was anything special. If they were going to go through figuring out this whole thing together, they needed a certain amount of trust, and they needed to know as much as possible. He shrugged at the ‘thanks’, ”It’s not a big deal. I mean- I was curious too. Can’t think of much it’d be good for but, I guess it’s cool to know.” He nodded when Matt explained that he had the ability to do it to the girls, figuring he probably wouldn’t get to try that out any times soon, but again, it wasn’t like he could think of a reason he’d actually want to or need to do it (not that he was the expert of ‘situations shifters end up in’ or anything). And he's certainly have any idea what to use it for once he ended up having to spend a prolonged amount of time with the girls. ”Oh! Sorry, you can move.” Suddenly Nash was able to lift his foot again and go.. well, wherever he wanted. He took a few steps back towards Matt and jokingly said ”I was just about to ask if that was going to be a permanent thing.”
”Right.. sorry.. again.. if you think I’m bad- wait till you meet Emma.” Oh, right, Nash forgot he had that to look forward too. Anyway, he chuckled at Matt’s description until he added ”She’s like me, but on four cans of soda all the time.” Okay, that.. was actually kind of scary. ”And April’s.. not Emma.” ”I want to say that that’s a good thing..?” I mean, there was only so much hyperness that could be handled at a certain time for someone who was never hyper (expect when being screwed with by vampires but yanno) Matt mentioned that he could stay at his place if he needed to (in a really long winded rambly explanation I’m not quoting) and then added ”Is that weird? I hope that’s not weird.” ”I’d say it’s the most normal thing you’ve said so far... ‘Course, that’s not saying much.” He smirked. ”But anyway, thanks.” Weird as it was kind of was it was still pretty nice of him to offer and Nash might have ended up taking him up on that. ”You wanna show me?” ”What are you thinking?” ”Race back to your place?” ”Alright, let’s do it.” He got ready and then, counted to three FAIRLY (yanno, unlike a Tilly character would) before running off in the direction of his camp, skillfully evading forest obstacles in the way. He got to their finish line considerably before Matt and couldn’t help looking kind of smug about it.

Swear on my life. So they could do a freaky mind control thing. Matt had known, but seeing it was the most surprised he’d been since he’d phased. Nash was really cool about it (to Matt’s surprise) and with everything else and Matt was pretty sure he liked the guy and so things were looking pretty good. Can’t think of much it’d be good for but, I guess it’s cool to know. Matt nodded in agreement. ”If I could think of a reason to use it I’d have done it by now. It’d have to be pretty worth it if I did it to April because she’d attack me.” Matt was unlikely to do it to Emma, and April would kill him so Nash probably would discover that he had more of a reason to use it than Matt did once a little time had gone by. It was a good thing Matt didn’t do it all the time anyway because clearly he didn’t pay enough attention to it to remember it had been done. I was just about to ask if that was going to be a permanent thing. He laughed as he responded. ”Reason I don’t do it number one—Emma’d be quiet for days before I figured out why.” Of course Emma being quiet would be like a huge reminder that Matt had done something to cause that but Matt wasn’t very observant and he was kind of oblivious so there was no telling how long it’d take him to realize that.
I want to say that that’s a good thing..? Nash still had no idea how ridiculous the two of them were to deal with mostly April in Matt’s own opinion. ”Guess it depends on who you ask. She’s sort of intimidating… then again you’re you and I’m me so…” Matt didn’t really know Nash enough to judge how he’d get along with the other two but from what he’d gotten, Nash was definitely more assertive. ”You don’t seem like someone who’d take shit from her,” he added with a shrug. And then he was really cool again about Matt being all overexcited and so Matt let that go until the idea of a race came up because he really wanted to do that and he wasn’t going to pretend otherwise. Alright, let’s do it. Nash counted (okay yea Matt would have done that differently but you love him) and they were off and while Matt was semi-fast it didn’t take long for him to fall behind. Once he did make it back Nash looked pretty satisfied with himself but hey Matt would’ve been too after that. Putting his hands on his knees while catching his breath, he laughed a little. ”Damn, you’re fast.” He then let himself fall to the ground since he was Matt and he did that a lot and Nash was going to find that out sooner or later. ”What were you doing awake this early?” Granted it was like the early afternoon but yea…Matt. ”You ruined my exciting plans for the day. I was gonna go back to sleep until the girls came banging on my door.”

Well Nash was just learning things all over the place. How shifters lived, who wanted to kill them, what kind of cool tricks they could do, and arguably the most importaint… the fact that nothing should ever be left to depend upon Matt’s short term memory skills. ”Reason I don’t do it number one- Emma’d be quiet for days before I figured out why.” ”Yeah, can’t imagine she’d be very happy with you.” Nash responded, amused by the idea even without knowing the girl. Hell, even before Matt formally went ahead and described the girls Nash had a pretty good idea about them (or.. how Matt saw them anyway, it wasn’t necessarily the most realistic or well-rounded description) from the stuff he was saying. He talked about them a lot which implied that as annoying as he was making them sound (in Nash’s defense all he knew was that one was violent and one talked a lot) they probably weren’t that horrible (ha yeah ask him that again in a week).
”You don’t seem like someone who’d take shit from her.” Nash laughed. ”Guess I’d have to meet her for myself to know but no, I doubt I would.” It wasn’t too hard an assumption to make because Nash wasn’t really a person who took shit from anyone. He wone their race and Matt caught up with him and then dropped to the ground because Matt liked laying on the ground and sitting in trees and doing everything that wasn’t standing like a normal person but Nash didn’t know that yet. He just kind of raised an eyebrow. ”What were you doing awake this early?” ”Early? It’s got to be at least one… We’re not supposed to be nocturnal, are we?” That really wasn’t going to work for him because Nash was a morning person. Like, really a morning person. He got that he was still on military schedule and most people didn’t wake up at like five every morning but he was pretty sure any time after tweleve was a little (okay, a lot) late for anyone… except like any Tilly character and Tilly herself but not getting into that. ”Sorry I ruined your plans though.” he added, obviously still joking about the whole thing ”Sounds like you’re missing out on a lot for me.”

So Matt seemed slightly obsessed with the girls but that was because they were his only human contact for the past like…month. He wasn’t social or an exciting person so he didn’t have much else to talk about. Nash was going to have to meet them in person to get the full effect though because those two were interesting, to say the least. ”You’ll see when you meet them for yourself.” Even only having known the guy for a little bit Nash seemed to be pretty easy to get along with as long as you were a decent human being and so he wasn’t complaining. Though Matt didn’t need him to complain to realize how obsessive he was sounding (well Nash didn’t know Matt was vampire obsessed yet so he needed to be obsessed with something). ”Sorry---my life’s not interesting so my conversation topic options are limited,” he said with a grin. The guy had been in the military—his life had to be more interesting. Especially considering he didn’t seem to consider laying on the ground a hobby. Early? It’s got to be at least one… ”Dude, early dies at four.” Okay so Matt was abnormal in that aspect this much I will admit. We’re not supposed to be nocturnal, are we? Matt laughed…even though the way things had been going it was a pretty reasonable question. ”No but if you plan on hanging out with me every now and then don’t expect company before midday.” He laughed at Nash’s apology. ”Like I said, not an interesting person.”
