There had been several jobs that Rachel wanted at this point. As long as it had something to do with science or chemistry it was fine. However not once did she picture herself having a job that had to do with tutoring or teaching. Being a teacher was extremely far away from where she saw herself. Honestly Rachel hoped to be in New York, or somewhere far away, in a science lab. Being able to use chemicals and inventing new medicine and such. All that fun stuff. But she needed money and thanks to the extra psych classes she took, she was eligible to apply for a substitute teacher or a tutor. It was a job, and Rach really needed the money. She couldn’t live with her father and brother forever. Eventually she needed to find an apartment for herself. Or at least a place where she can have Paul over without the judging eyes of her family members. So this was her life until something else came along. Though the woman gave up on her dreams of living La Push at all. But she would eventually find a better job than this.
Anyways. Rachel had went through a little training to get used to the La Push school system again, though it didn’t take long since she was such a crazy student back in the day. As in she knew every policy and rule of the school district in this area. But once they were fine with her, they gave her, her first job. She was getting assigned to tutor a girl named Jacki White. Apparently she hasn’t been in school the last couple of days. And needed to catch up in her classes or she would be held back. Her parents were willing to pay for it, so Rachel was in business. She just hoped the girl would make this easier than the other delinquents. Maybe she was sick or bed ridden because of an accident and actually wanted the help. Rachel didn’t get all the personal details. Just her class schedule, the things she missed, and what things she needs to learn before coming back to class. Her home and personal life was not in the file the school gave her. And to be honest Rachel didn’t care. She didn’t know the girl, so she wasn’t about to start acting like her mother. Like she does with everybody in her life. And this was just a job. This is why Rachel couldn’t’ be a teacher, she was too detached from other people and was extremely socially awkward.
Rachel drove slowly down the streets until she found the right house. She pulled off to the side of the road. Rachel looked through her two big bags and quickly found her ‘lesson plan’. Rach double checked to make sure she had everything for today. Today she was going to work with math and English. Tomorrow would be science and history. The next day would be any other electives she was in. Rachel had stayed in all weekend, trying to familiarize herself with all the material so she was prepared. Of course that still didn’t make the woman an expert but she could answer some questions the girl had. The woman grabbed her big duffel bag and made her way to the front door. She double checked the address on the mail box with the sticky note that was in her hand. Once she was comfortable enough, she walked up to the front door and rang the doorbell. It was a little weird but the woman started to get nervous. She wasn’t good in any social setting or when it came to meeting new people. Rach bit her bottom lip and waited for someone to answer the door.

"WELL I DUG MY KEYS IN TO THE SIDE OF HIS PRETTY LITTLE SOUPED UP FOUR WHEEL DRIVE" Jacki sang along with her ipod louder than anyone would have appreciated were they in the house to hear her, all the while jumping up and down on her bed and thoroughly enjoying herself. It was officially Jacki's fourth day in a row playing hookie. Of course, she had a very good reason for missing almost the entire week of school. See, Monday, she'd overslept, and so she did what any reasonable teenager would do and told herself she would try again tomorrow. The next day she did wake up early enough to get to school on time, but she'd wanted to go to a concert that she never would have made it to if she left after school let out. So, she had to miss that day too. The day after that, Willow didn't have any classes, so it only seemed fair Jacki took the day off to hang out with her. And today, Tala did have classes, and so the house would get lonely if Jacki went to school! Tomorrow she probaby wouldn't go either, because there was really no point of just going one day in a week, and besides, she needed a break before her super exciting weekend started!
So, despite the fact that it was the middle of the afternoon she was still dressed in only flannel pajama pants and a thin spaghetti strap shirt, her hair looking like she'd rolled out of bed and spent the next headbanging.. which is basically exactly what she'd been doing. She was thinking about going out of a bike ride on the hills soon, but she wanted to wait and see if Willow wanted to come with her. Because when she didn't invite her friend places she got all uppity about it later. So for now, she was stalling. And having fun! She probably should have been thinking about doing some school work, but honestly the idea didn't even cross her mind as an option. It's not like there was any logical reason for Jacki to be as horrible a student as she was. Her parents were both intelligent people with a college education, and Tala could win an award for the world's biggest nerd. But Jacki could do five cartwheels in a row, so, she's pretty sure she'd be alright in life. And she never had any problems being the black sheep in her family. The black sheep got a song written about it loved my millions of little children everywhere, right? Right! Besides, it wasn't like she was stupid. She was very intelligent. Intelligent enough to know when assignments were a waste of her valuable time!
All of a sudden, she thought she heard a knock on the door. It was surprising she heard anything with how loud her music was and how distracted she was, but she was almost sure she heard a knock. That was weird. She pressed pause and dropped the ipod on her bed before running to the front and peeking out the window. Sure enough, there was someone standing right outside before, and weird enough, it was someone Jacki had never seen before in her life. I mean, La Push wasn't exactly a big area, and they'd been living there a long time. Maybe she was lost? There was no other real explanation. Most girls would feel uncomfortable opening the door to a stranger, one because their parents taught them that the world is full of scary murderous people and two, because she's wearing her pajamas.. but this was Jacki we're talking about. She opened it up and stood in front of it so that the other girl couldn't come inside yet. "Hello!" No, no she wasn't planning on giving her a chance to respond to that. "If you're trying to sell something, I'm not interested. And if you're here because of the eHarmony add for Tala, he's not home right now but I'll gladly leave a message. And if you're planning on robbing the house, I just thought you should know that I can kickbox." All the while of course she had on her most pleasant and innocent looking smile.

Rachel bit her bottom lip and looked behind her at the empty street. Of course it was empty everybody was at school or work. Well everybody except her and the girl she was supposed to tutor. The woman spun around when she heard the door open up. “H—“ Before she could even respond the smaller girl was rambling on and on. About eHarmony and robbing? Rachel gave her a confused look as she clutched her bag to her shoulder. Okay. The smaller girl was going way too fast for a social inept person to respond to. “I have a boyfriend,” Rachel finally managed to blurt out. Not that it was any of this girl’s business but she needed to say something stop the madness. She paused for a moment staring at the girl with confusion written on her face. She quickly fumbled through her bag finally pulling on her wallet. “Here’s my ID, I’m here to tutor a girl named Jacki. Who I presume is you.” Rachel didn’t bother introducing herself since she gave her, her ID. Rachel clearly did not have the build to rob a house, no matter who her opponent would be. And as far as selling went…she wasn’t a people person.
And Rach knew that you needed to know something about being social to be a salesperson. A person needed to know how to be manipulative. How to engage in conversation. And how to make a useless product sound effective. Rachel didn’t have any of those skills. She barely had enough people skills to being tutoring a stranger. But she needed the money. And quite frankly, if this didn’t work then she could be asked to transfer to another student. Of course it would get this small girl into trouble but Rachel didn’t know. She had no loyalty to her. And while her motherly instincts told her that wasn’t an option, the woman had to be realistic about her situation and tolerance. The woman took back her ID and awkwardly stuck it back into her wallet. “So I think we should start soon, maybe start with the easy subjects.” Rachel walked past Jacki and just let herself in. She knew every well that wasn’t what you were supposed to do. But she needed to get this stuff started. The sooner they can get through this, the sooner Rachel can get home and cook dinner. There was so much she needed to do today. Sometimes Rachel could be irresponsible and let things go. She wish she could just cuddle on a couch and be satisfied with serving frozen dinners. But it wasn’t in her.
“I brought all the stuff you will need to catch up. Like I said we will start with something easy…either math or science. Which subject would you prefer?” Rachel questioned as she set her bag down on the coffee table. She pulled out some folders, papers, and utensils. She grabbed the chemistry and algebra text book. “I like science personally, but sometimes people prefer math.” Rachel was completely oblivious to the fact that she would basically breaking every social laws there were. Inviting herself in, making herself at home. And pretty much telling her host what was going to happen in the next couple of hours. Rach was so oblivious to the fact that she was probably making an enemy out of this small girl but not letting her get a say in anything. But she knew that giving her enough time to respond would just set them back. So Rachel was going to jump and get things finished.

Were Jacki not so high on the joys of being alive and not surrounded by boring people, she might just have felt bad for the girl who looked all but completely terrified as she went on about her brother, the house, and of course, her incredibly awesome kickboxing skills. “Here’s my ID, I’m here to tutor a girl named Jacki. Who I presume is you.” Jacki flipped over the little card. Well, now she knew that the strange anti-social female's name was Rachel.. but that didn't make her any closer to wanting her inside her house. Especially when the words 'tutor' and 'Jacki' were used in the same sentence. "Hey! What are you doing? Just because you have an ID doesn't mean you're not a robber.. or a cereal killer! How stupid do you think I am? I mean, a tutor? That's a pretty bad alibi. I think I'd know if I asked for a tutor, and I most definitely did not. So you should get out of my house before I call the cops." Because when threatening people entered your house without permission, you followed them around annoying them. Not that this girl was in any way threatening, which was why Jacki was following her around annoying her.
Unlike Rachel, Jacki was an extremely social person very well graced in the art of speaking. In fact, it was her charm and language skills that made some people love her so much... and others want to pull their hair out! Either way, Jacki was one of those people who were incredibly hard to forget. Rachel said that she thought they should start soon, and Jacki rolled her eyes. "Easy like what? Gym? That's awesome! I like gym. You don't really strike me as the gym person though. Actually, scratch that.. I think we should make milkshakes. My house, my rules." Sadly (for Rachel) Jacki had not been in any way informed of this plan to be tutored, and even more sadly for Rachel, if she had.. she wouldn't be giving the girl any more respect. Besides, the whole thing was probably Tala's stupid idea.. to prove he associated with actually humans in college or something.. unless she was a robot.. which was totally a thought in Jacki's mind the way she was acting.
Jacki really hadn't thought this girl was serious about the schoolwork until she started pulling out books and paper and stuff. “I like science personally, but sometimes people prefer math.” And normal people preferred neither. In fact, Jacki only knew one other person who'd consider either of those subjects to be fun. "Are you sure you're not here to date my brother.. because I swear, you two are like twins.. Actually, I'm glad you're not dating. I couldn't handle two of him. And the kids!" As horrified as Rachel would undoubtedly be at the thought of having kids with someone she'd never even met before, Jacki would need mind bleach to get rid of the horrible images she'd just created... well either that or awesomer images.. which she wouldn't be getting until this crazy girl left her house. "Really, what are you doing here? I don't need or want a tutor, and if I wanted to spend the day doing math and science, I would have just gone to school." I mean, really, duh.. How stupid was this girl?

So the fact small fact that you are still talking to me without feeling the least bit threatened, proves that I am of no threat to you,” Rachel stated simply and logically. She wasn’t trying to sound rude to the other; she was just stating the obvious facts. “You didn’t ask for a tutor, your parents did. They asked the school and the school asked me. You can call the counselor’s office; they can verify my ‘alibi’ as you called it.” Again Rachel was simply just stating the facts. There was no malice or annoyance in her voice. Though she was ready to slap Jacki mentally. Rach knew that calling the office was only going to waste everybody’s time. And quite honestly Rachel just wanted to get this done and over with. This small girl was already proving to be an annoyance. Rach would much rather be home reading on the couch or being with Paul. Of course the woman tried her hardest to not let any of these emotions show. Otherwise her job would probably increase in difficulty.
Gym. That was an awful subject and to make people actually participate in such a thing was inhumane. Rachel did horrible in gym class, if it wasn’t for the fact that she did excellent on the tests they had, she probably would have failed gym. It was just a really bad experience. Though she understood why schools did it. At least she understood now, with age comes wisdom apparently. But back then Rachel had wrote petitions to get the gym classes turned into electives. Obviously it did not work. Milkshakes, well maybe Rachel can work with that. It was how she kept the other boys’ attention. Through food and drinks. “I can make us milkshakes while you look over the material before we start. That sounds like a good plan.” Rachel skated over the whole house rules thing. Obviously as the guest she had the authority. That’s how it worked in polite society. Or so Rachel has been told many times when Jake and Rebecca had people over. Of course she wouldn’t know personally since she’s never really been a guest or had guests over. Rachel was always busy juggling classes, after school clubs, and being the mother figure to her siblings. It really wasn’t a mystery why Rachel turned out the way she did.
Rachel’s cheeks flushed immediately at the sound of children with a stranger. “I’m sure your brother is an attractive male but I do have a boyfriend,” Rachel reiterated. Honestly Rach was more embarrassed about the whole children thing. Some day she wanted to have kids. To actually be a mother rather than a fill-in would be a nice change of pace. But Paul has yet to propose to her, something she hasn’t hinted at yet. But it was getting to that point. Of course Rachel didn’t have the hinting abilities. But you know with the whole shifter thing and the fact that they were going to be together forever regardless, it was pretty obvious that the two should get married soon. Well Rach wasn’t even sure how Paul felt about the whole to be perfectly honest. Maybe he didn’t want the title or the certificate. Rachel did though. She wanted some normality to her newly complicated and supernatural life. Hence why she immediately took a tutoring job that she was quickly regretting.
“Then you should have gone to school!” Rachel exclaimed, slamming the textbook she had in her hand onto the couch next to her. That was it; Jacki finally rode down Rachel’s everlasting patience. Rach didn’t think it was possible. She had gained so much patience over the years between her siblings, people at school, the newly discovered pack, and Paul. The girl was the champion when it came to being patient. But this girl ruined her hard work. It was probably because Rach didn’t even want to be there and the girl wasn’t making it any easier. The woman stood up and stared straight at the small girl in front of her. Her mother-lecture mode was quickly turned on, with some edge to it. “I don’t think you have been listening. It is not up to you whether I am here or not. It is up to your parents, so take it up with them. And as far as the whole school thing goes, if you hadn’t missed so many days I would not even be here. I understand that you really don’t want me here. But you have to understand that the sooner you stop fighting me on this, the sooner we can get this done with and I can leave. Be smart about this.” Screw politeness at this point. Rachel was the adult and she was the tutor. By law and technically by society’s standards, she had authority. And up until this point she was going to be nice and try not to turn into the strict authority figure. But this girl had seriously pushed her luck. Sure Rachel should have had more patience and normally she would. But the woman did not want to be there and she realized being polite was not going to get her through this any quicker.

Really, Jacki had no idea who this girl thought she was, telling her when and when she didn’t feel threatened. Jacki, first of all, probably wouldn’t feel threatened if there were five huge guys with guns at her door. She certainly wasn’t threatened by this person. And then there she went again, assuming that if she was a robber or killer she’d have Jacki tied up was just an insult. Jacki could clearly take her. ”How do I know you aren’t one of those killers who starts to get to know me first and then as soon as I start trusting you you’re going to pull a gun, huh? It happens. I’ve seen it on TV.” Seriously, with all those crime shows now, real killers needed to watch out. Jacki had no idea how mentally imbalanced this girl was and what might trigger her to attack. Okay, so now it sounded like she was talking about a rattlesnake or something, but really, this is Jacki we’re talking about. Her imagination is can be a little overactive. Which is why when the girl said that her parents and the school could verify that this girl was a tutor, Jacki only laughed and shook her head. ”How do I know the “counselor” isn’t your accomplice? You think I trust those people?” It wasn’t like people in positions that were supposed to be trusted didn’t crack. Hello. Child abuse, police misconduct. Again, someone needed to watch less crime TV.
“I can make us milkshakes while you look over the material before we start. That sounds like a good plan.” ”Or I can make us milkshakes and then you go home. I like that one better.” The first thing Jacki’s brother would tell you about her was that if you give an inch… well you’re basically signing yourself up for ten yards. As an afterthought she added, ”Unless you don’t have a home.. or you don’t want to go home.. I mean, you can go wherever you want. Except my room because I don’t like you or Tala’s room because he has a sixth sense for when someone breaths air in his room and he’ll blame me.” Jacki wasn’t a totally rude person. She wasn’t even kicking the girl out. And if she was, she was letting her leave with a free milkshake. She just didn’t want to do what this girl wanted. And yes, that’s what she was, a girl. She looked older than Jacki, but not by enough for the girl to have a lot of respect for her. She was probably around her brothers age, and Jacki certainly didn’t respect him. He had no people skills or common sense. And neither did she. Which is why they couldn’t reproduce. Their baby would probably never talk and think calculus was fun and have all kinds of other problems and Jacki would have to report her brother to child services and it was really just a horrible idea that luckily this strange killer rattlesnake tutor woman didn’t seem to want to pursue.
”I’m sure your brother is an attractive male but I do have a boyfriend.” Yeah, see, she’d said that a few times now, but Jacki was still calling bullshit because she couldn’t think of a guy in the area (and like, there weren’t a lot of guys in the area, she knew most of them) who would date someone like her. It would be like if Tala came home with a girlfriend. They’d have to be a super geek. Like Rachel… Okay, so, basically, until proven otherwise Jacki was just going to believe that Tala and Rachel were in a relationship and Tala was keeping it a secret and Rachel didn’t know that Tala and Jacki were siblings because it wasn’t like there was much resemblance. ”He’s not that attractive. The male thing’s really all he has going for him. Do you mind if I ask your boyfriend’s name?” Okay, so Tala wasn’t exactly unattractive either (hey, they had the same genes) but Jacki obviously wasn’t going to say he was attractive because one he dressed like an eighty year old and two they were related. Jacki was actually starting to warm up to the girl and not mind talking to her so much when the whole school thing came up again. And then it happened. She snapped. Luckily, Jacki’s original killer theory seemed to be a little off… Either that or she was soon going to get the murder weapon. ”Then you should have gone to school!” ”I said I’d have gone if I wanted to do boring school work. I obviously don’t!” I mean really, this girl just wasn’t listening to anything.
Jacki listened to her rant and rave about how they basically had no control over the situation and it was her fault for not going to school and blah blah blah.. yeah, okay, she stopped listening after like, the second sentence when it became clear that Rachel was missing the point of…. Well basically life but I’m actually not gonna talk about how she’s a lost cause anymore. ”Look here, Sugar Queen-- first of all, you’re not going to yell at me in my house because I will drag you out the door and call my counselor with a story that I promise will made sure you can never tutor or teach or get any job ever again. You’re not my mother and you’re not a cop and you’re probably not even five years older than me so no, I’m not going to listen to you when you start ordering me around like a crazy person. The smart thing to do in this situation would be for you to apologize, so we can start over. We don’t have to do anything. You obviously don’t want to be here, and I don’t want you here. If you leave, I can tell my parents that you did your job, you’ll get paid, I can go back to jumping on my bed singing Carrie Underwood, and everyone wins.” Seriously, Jacki wondered who was really the smart one in this relationship.
