Jacki had really outdone herself this time. Well, in her opinion. Her's and Willows. And nobody else really mattered. The two of them had been trying to set Tala up for some time now. They'd even put an add on the internet. Of course, un-alien-like as they'd tried to make her brother sound, he still hadn't gotten any takers. She blamed the fact they lived smack in the middle of absolutely nowhere. Then, hanging out with the shifters at that party, she'd gotten a great idea. Devon. Not everyone needed or wanted someone in their lives -Jacki was one of those people- but she was seriously convinced that Devon and her brother were two fishes in the same boat (although..maybe not fishes exactly..because fishes in a boat were usually dead) and that boat contrained people who'd be a little less sour-puss-y if they had some affectionate feelings towards someone every once in a while. And it wasn't like having them give it a try was going to hurt anybody. (She was too damn adorable for them to hurt. She tested the theory on Willow!)
Anyway, Jacki knew for this to work she had to be sneaky. She had to be sly. She had to be diabolical. (She was wearing dark sunglasses and everything.) And what better time to stage a totally diabolical blind date than on Valentines day? Jacki personally didn't celebrate Valentines Day. (She celebrated Half-Off-Candy-The-Day-After-Valentines-Day-Day.) So, it wasn't like she had anything better to be doing. Just make with the set up making magic. Oh, and Jacki had been setting up all day. She'd cleaned up the whole den (okay, so she'd actually just kind of thrown all the junk in a closet that she really hoped nobody would try to open because they'd probably get killed), picked out movies, made food, and even gotten a present for Devon from Tala. Everything had to be perfect cause lord knows the two of them weren't going to be putting any effort into it. Jacki had a lot of really amazing skills - you know, like magic and ventriloquism and soccer - but she'd never thought she'd make such a good matchmaker. (Note to self: Bring up idea to Willow about starting personal dating service site.)
Jacki danced around the kitchen - oh I'm not being metaphorical. She had at least three minutes before she could take the food out. What else was she supposed to do in the kitchen? She occasionally peeked out to make sure that her brother was still up in his room. She hadn't been worried about Tala interrupting because he never left his cave anyway. She was lucky she'd even gotten him to agree to hanging out with her tonight. Yeah, that's what she'd told him. They were going to watch movies. The same thing she'd told Devon. And so, technically, lying hadn't happened. Finishing up in the kitchen, she grabbed everything and ran it down stairs, setting it all up neatly (dudes, think lady in the tramp dinner scene- this was gonna be romantic). Then she ran back up and stood at the bottom of the stairs. Deep breath. Of she loved being loud. "Tala! It's night time! Come join the world!"
Okay, that took care of one of them. He'd hopefully listen and be in the den by the time Devon got there. (Because, really, she only wanted to explain this once). She ran back to the living room and peaked out the window. Just in time. She waited until the older woman (seriously older woman, but that was a story for another time) was right outside before opening the door."Hi Devon! Glad you came! There's been a slight change of plans; I hope you don't mind too much! Don't worry, it'll still be lots of fun!" Smiling honestly, she led them into the den. She glanced around the room -check, check, check, check, check - she was surprised Tala hadn't screwed anything up yet. "Tala got you these!" She offered the gift to Devon (guys, wolfy teddy bear with chocolates box, i know, i'm awesome) "So..um..you probably know where this is going. Movies are over there, foods over there, have fun, thank me later, I'll come back to check on you!" And with that, she was out of there faster than you could say JackiI'mGonnaKillYou (don't even try Tala, don't even try), locking the door behind her.

He really should’ve seen it coming. For future reference, Jacki asking to spend time with you was always some maniacal plan to ruin the rest of your night. Having known Jacki far more than he wanted to, Tala should have expected that agreeing to hang out with her was a bad idea. She had some weird obsession with setting him up with a girl as if he was the most ridiculously lonely human in existence. He’d been in his room doing homework most of the day (well, most of the week.. month.. life) and had remained oblivious to what Jacki had been preparing downstairs. With the intensity in which Tala did his work, Jacki could probably do drugs and party and blow stuff up down there and he’d have no clue (of course, none of those were very likely.. except the blowing things up part since she was under the absurd impression that she could perform magic tricks).
Finally, after practically a whole day of solitude, her voice broke the silence. Tala! It’s nighttime! Come join the world! She must’ve thought that TJ was some vampire or something (no pun intended). She acted like he never even saw the light of day. He only spent like 15 hours a day in his bedroom, and that was only on days he wasn’t expected to be running around with shifters. Nighttime? I had no idea, he responded with dry sarcasm as he packed up some of his work and headed out of his room for the second or third time that day. Making himself comfortable in the den, it didn’t take him long to figure out that something was up. He’d have been concerned if he believed that the setup was just for him and Jacki, but he was even more concerned as he came to the conclusion that it wasn’t.
Jacki..? What’re you up to, he asked with confusion before hearing his sister greet Devon. Devon. Tala and Devon. Jacki’d really done it this time. Before he could think up a valid question that Jacki would be likely to answer, Jacki and Devon were in the den and Jacki was claiming that Tala had gotten her.. a Valentine’s Day gift? Really? He interjected involuntarily before he could really produce an intelligent response. I… that wasn’t.. I don’t even.. He turned to glare at Jacki knowing it’d have no effect on her but pure amusement. For the record, ‘JackiI’mGonnaKillYou’ would have been the next utterance leaving Tala’s lips had she not disappeared too quickly for him to get it out. She closed the door, and it didn’t really click in his mind what was going on until he went after the door and attempted unsuccessfully to open it. He turned to Devon awkwardly (his social skills weren’t his forte). She’s insane. I had no part in this.

Devon carefully placed her hair in a ponytail, trying not to crush the end curls that she just worked on. Okay, so maybe the girl was going a little over board on her looks for a simple movie night with Jacki. But that was Devon; she always wanted to look perfect, even if perfection took two hours. It was something she learned to live with. It was a little odd to have a movie night with Jacki. Dev liked the girl, she was funny and an interesting person. But really she just saw her as Tala’s sister. The two really didn’t spend a lot of time with each other since she saw her brother for simple pack business and that was it. But maybe movie night wouldn’t be so bad. The female shifter was always told to get more friends. Like actual friends. Not the type of friends she had before coming to the pack. The ones she used and manipulated to reach her goals. She had gained plenty of those over the last century. God, she was old. And every day she was worried something would appear on her body as a sign to her age. But it never happened, thank god for shifting. It really helped with this whole immortal, staying young thing.
Once Dev fastened her leather boots over her skinny jeans, she got in her car and headed towards the White Residence. It only took a mere five minutes since she sped down the streets like a nut case. Why do the speed limit? It wasn’t like the cops really enforced the laws around here. After all people were dying left and right in this small little town, you would like if they gave crap about the laws they would put two and two together. And figure out the thing that has been staring them dead in the face. Literally. It really isn’t that hard to figure out that there is another species out there. One that sucks the blood of others and makes it look like an animal attack. Here’s a hint: it’s not the shifters in wolf form. It’s vampires, yes actual vampires. And most humans were just too stupid and slow to understand that concept. Or maybe it was just too wild for them to believe.
The female shifter pulled into the White’s driveway, quickly turning off her car. She looked in the rearview mirror and adjusted her bangs slightly before exiting the car. She barely made it to the front door before she heard the loud sounds of Jacki from inside the building. She just got to the door before it swung open, and there stood the human girl. “Hey. I---what?” was all the female shifter managed to say before she was ushered into their den. Devon turned to see Tala standing in the den with her. “Hey Ta----” her greeting was cut short when she finally took in her whole surrounding. The movies, food, romantic feel to the whole set up. She felt her face form into a confused look. What? It dawned on Devon what was going on when Jacki handed her the gifts that were supposedly from Tala. No offense, but the boy didn’t strike Dev as the type to get these types of gifts. Jacki set up a date for her and Tala, and on Valentine’s Day no less. It wasn’t like Devon wasn’t interested in being a relationship, she just didn’t think a setup is what she needed.
Before the girl could yell at the other female, she was already gone and the door was locked. Apparently it was a strong enough lock that wouldn’t open for shifter strength. Where Jacki managed to find such a lock was beyond Devon. “I believe that,” Devon muttered with an irritated tone. She glanced around the place once more. Tossing the wolfy bear aside, she walked over to the movies while she began nibbling on the chocolates. “Well we’re stuck in here, so might as well try to enjoy it. Too bad she didn’t leave any alcohol,” Devon added the last part as more of a comment to herself more than anything else. Alcohol would surely make this situation a little less awkward. Though maybe even that stuff wasn’t powerful enough to fix it.

Jacki must have been planning it for days.. or maybe she randomly acquired the idea that Devon and Tala.. okay thinking stops right there. That was enough. Devon was Tala’s Beta. That was it. They barely spent one-on-one time and quite frankly it was surprising that Jacki was locking Tala in some room with someone else the way she’d been annoying him to hang out with her lately. The next time he could, he’d complain to her about how hypocritical she was being. She wasn’t going to be happy because the next time she wanted to watch movies with Tala, he was going to tell her to have fun by herself. But… yanno… only the “boring” people thought ahead like that.
And now he was annoyed and stuck in a room with someone else who was annoyed. How Jacki would expect that to turn romantic he had no idea. I believe that. Anyone who knew Tala and Jacki would believe that. It was never Tala. He minded his own business—the guy had enough to worry about in regards to his classes and school to go around messing with other people’s plans. Jacki, on the other hand, seemed to have all the time in the world for that. She said she’d be back in. As soon as she opens the door.. He wasn’t going to give her enough time to close it. He felt pretty bad that Devon’s plans had to get ruined. Not to mention.. it was awkward. Tala was a very socially awkward person in general.
At the very least, Devon was being positive and didn’t seem to have plans to let this ruin her night. Too bad she didn’t leave any alcohol, she had said, setting off a red flag within Tala. Of course, his not wanting there to be alcohol around would come back to get him. It usually wasn’t in the house. He didn’t want it as a temptation as it could easily drive him away from doing the work he needed to have motivation to do. It could also serve as a tool to get Jacki to do more stupid things than she was usually trying to do, so it really didn’t sound like a good idea. Now, though, it wouldn’t have been the end of the world if they’d had a little. Okay, so that’s my fault, but you don’t get it. Jacki would blow up the house or something.

Devon cocked a perfect brown eyebrow up at Tala. Really? His sister was clearly not going to back for a while. If Devon was Jacki, she wouldn’t come back until hours later when something possibly happened between the two of them. Even though she was relatively sure nothing that Jacki had in mind would happen between the two of them to be perfectly honest. It wasn’t that Tala wasn’t a good looking guy. He was. Just not really…Devon’s type. She liked the ones she could verbally spare with, one that would show her that she was his princess, and one that wasn’t socially awkward. Tala seemed like a nice guy and would make some nerdy girl happy in the future. Dev was not a nerdy girl though. She was more like the party cheerleader type. Okay maybe not a cheerleader but definitely not nerdy. “As soon as she opens the door, what? Are you going to tackle her to the ground or something?” Devon asked sarcastically as she grabbed one of the non-alcoholic drinks and took a sip of it. “That’s a sight I would like to see.”
The female shifter couldn’t help but let out a small laugh at the mental image of that. If she didn’t know that Tala was a shifter she would honestly think Jacki would completely kick his butt. It would be such an awkward and funny fight too. Something Devon hasn’t seen since high school. Back in those days, Devon saw all types of fights. And the ones that made it look awkward were probably the most entertaining. “I highly doubt that little girl could blow up a house with alcohol in her system…maybe make a few bad decisions. But blow up a house? Aren’t you being a little over the top?” Sure, Devon didn’t really know Jacki nor did she live with the girl. But Jacki didn’t seem like the type to blow up the home she was living in. Sure she was a bit odd at times, but the girl seemed to have common sense. And it was just common sense to not blow up the house you are living in. Blow up your brother’s car or a tree… that would make more sense.
“Would you come and sit down, Jacki won’t be back for hours and there’s free food,” Devon patted the seat across from her. “Come on, I’m not the worst person to spend time with.” It was true. There were worse beings out there. Like vampires. Vampire were pretty bad, barely any shifter would want to spend time with those creatures. Granted, Devon had made a bloodsucking friend. One that she wasn’t willing to tell her pack mates about. Even Keisha didn’t know about Josef. But hey, a girl’s got to have her own secrets. But yes, compared to the vampires Devon wasn’t that bad. Granted, Tala could sit with a nicer shifter. If one even existed. As far as the girl has seen, most shifters were obnoxious and not that friendly. But Devon got along with most of them.

As soon as she opens the door, what? Are you going to tackle her to the ground or something? It didn’t sound like a horrible idea, actually. Though for some reason Tala couldn’t really bring himself to do that. When he thought about it, he really didn’t know what he’d do if Jacki opened the door… other than make a run for it, maybe. That’s a sight I would like to see. ”I… don’t know… but you’re not going to see me tackle my sister.” He watched Devon take a drink and suddenly he wished there was alcohol in the room. ”Although I wouldn’t be as opposed to seeing you tackle her if it’ll get us out. “ He wasn’t completely one hundred percent uptight all the time.
Devon laughed at his comment but the funny thing was he was completely serious. Jacki was eccentric and there wasn’t much she wouldn’t do to prove a point… or to cure her boredom. Starting a fire wouldn’t be that far-fetched. Aren’t you being a little over the top? Tala grinned and shook his head. ”You don’t really know her.” He didn’t mean to say it in a condescending sort of way, but he spent a lot of time with her (because as much as she annoyed him to death he did tend to enjoy being around her… don’t tell her that). ”I don’t think you understand the extent of her insanity.”
He’d been sort of awkwardly standing (he did everything awkwardly but beside the point) so it was only a matter of time before Devon was going to say something. Would you come and sit down, Jacki won’t be back for hours and there’s free food. Tala sighed and succumbed, sitting across from Devon before grabbing some chocolate. Come on, I’m not the worst person to spend time with. That, Tala could appreciate. He didn’t disagree. ”Can’t argue with you there.” Devon was a decent human being and she was amusing and friendly enough to make for a good time… even for someone as dull as Tala. He could’ve been stuck with Jacki and banging his head into the wall within the first ten minutes. ”You don’t think this’ll be hours, do you? What are we supposed to do?” He wasn’t exactly a movie person… and it wasn’t that he had anything against Devon but she was his beta… and only his beta.

Devon should have known that. Hence why she asked in such a sarcastic tone. And then he caught her a little by surprise at his next statement. The brunette let out a chuckle. “Well look who actually has a sense of humor,” Devon stated shaking her head slightly. The image of her tackling Jacki would be funny. But Dev wasn’t about to wrinkle her outfit or tackle one of the few people on this plane that she actually got along with. “Maybe we can just make a run for it; technically we can run faster than her.” Even though Devon was wearing heels, like she always does, she could totally out right a human. Because of the whole shifter thing. And Jacki didn’t really strike as the type to run after people when they got away. Just saying.
Tala was right, she didn’t know Jacki. And until tonight Devon was actually willing to get to know the girl. But after this, she wasn’t so sure. Of course for a girl to manipulate both her and Tala had to be smart. At least smart enough to outsmart Devon’s bullshit detector. Maybe she did want to get to know Jacki. The two of them could do some serious damage together. Maybe even more so than Keisha and Devon together. “I think I can estimate her insanity. I mean no normal human willingly accepts werewolves as real…let alone hangs out with them on a daily basis.” It was true, a person had to be completely insane to live this life. Which is why it was really to find anyone normal in Forks or La Push. It was like this was the hot spot for the supernatural. And any human that was involved clearly had something wrong with their sanity. Who would willingly fall in love with a vampire? Or go cliff diving with werewolves? Yea, Jacki was crazy. But maybe not fire starting crazy.
The brunette was happy that the boy decided to sit down and also agree that she wasn’t a terrible person. She was a terrible person for all the things she has done and got people to do. But that was in the past. Dev was still a manipulator but she didn’t do it as much. And to be honest, she was actually starting to enjoy the life of a middle class person. For once in her life, Devon was perfectly happy where she was at. And surprisingly she was not on the top of a social ladder. She was second to the top, technically. But still, Devon never really settled for second. Until now. And it kind of suited her. “She seems pretty determined for something to happen, so yes it might take a couple of hours before we see her again.” Jacki put a lot of work into the set up and she knew her brother. So obviously she knew how long it might take for something to happen. Even though Devon knew nothing would actually happen between the two of them. He was just her pack mate, maybe a friend…nothing more. “Well here’s a crazy idea…I think we are supposed to enjoy each other’s company and maybe even watch a video.” Okay was she overly using sarcasm on that one, yes. But they were stuck in a room together with movies and free food. It wasn’t the worse situation she’s been in.
