It was time for a rematch. Obviously, Cal was going to win again because he was just all around better than Blake (don’t tell Blake—it might shock him). Therefore the race they were currently having was really pointless and stupid but Cal had managed to avoid most trees so far so it was looking like a success. Why did Blake lose the first time? Well, it was because he was slow but he did end up getting distracted by some girl and blah blah blah. Apparently, that was a viable excuse but whatever. Cal would show him.. when he won against Blake a second time he’d be the champion. That plan seemed to be going well until the scent of another vampire came across Cal’s path. Involuntarily, he started to follow it, taking himself off-course. His curiosity often got the best of him and if someone else was nearby, he was going to have to push some buttons because this was his and Blake’s turf. After about thirty seconds of running in the wrong direction, Cal rolled his eyes as it occurred to him what was going on. Dammit! No, no that doesn’t count. I—forget it. Too late now, he muttered to himself, forfeiting the race to go feed his curiosity.
Curse Callum and his short attention span. He really needed to get back to Blake.. but Blake could deal with it because he’d done the same thing not too long ago. There really were too many vampires around.. that was why the shifters were going insane lately. Cal didn’t get it.. nobody liked Forks. Nobody outside the town had heard of Forks. If vampires had been around forever then why were they all coming back to this place when it clearly wasn’t the safest place around for them? Surely they’d heard about the shifters—maybe they just didn’t care. Blake and Cal didn’t care too much. They actually enjoyed getting on some nerves, purposely running right along the border knowing they were untouchable. It just seemed like an unlikely place for vampires to congregate when the only form of entertainment was to race on the same route over and over again.
The scent became stronger and stronger as Cal approached the vampire. As soon as he saw that she was a girl, Blake’s story had run through his mind. He stopped near her while keeping a safe distance, his eyes narrowed. Gwen? It was more to himself than to her as he remembered the name Blake had mentioned. I swear if you’re Gwen..what the hell?! Do you have anything better to do than prance around ruining races? Blake’s gonna—please tell me you’re Gwen. After that rant, she better had been Gwen. As unlikely as it seemed, he was in the same general area that they’d been in before. Maybe she enjoyed distracting people or maybe she had no life. Maybe when she was a little kid her father offered to race with her and she was distracted by something and now she vowed to spend the rest of eternity ruining it for other people. Some people really had messed up priorities.

Gwen yanked her hair back into a pony tail, her curls getting in the way slightly. She fastened her leather jacket and opened her window. The female vampire had decided to go for a run today, even though her ‘brother’ wanted her to stay home. Something about the shifters going crazy and the vampire population increasing. Not like she didn’t know that already. Gwen had lived for two hundred years, she could handle some new vamps and couple whiny wolves. Well she might not be able to fight them, but she knew by now how to evade and stay alive. Glancing behind her, she listened to make sure PJ was still in the kitchen grading papers. Quietly, she crawled out her window. Gwen bit her lips, as she looked at how far the ground was and then back up to the tree that was a few feet from her. With some force, the female jumped straight from her window, into the tree. Gracefully she landed on the branch and suppressed the urge to chuckle.
With another forceful jump, she landed onto a branch. This process kept until she managed to land safely on the ground. The female vampire glanced back at her house; there was no sign on her brother anywhere. Good he didn’t hear her, or at least decided not to go after her. Either way, the girl was free. Smiling, Gwen sprinted off into the forest. Maybe this time she won’t trip and run into another vampire. The last two times she went into the forest she had an accident and ran into another vampire. Of course the first time caused her to make a really good friend. The second time resulted in her having…well not exactly a friend. But not an enemy either. Honestly Gwen wasn’t sure what exactly had transpired between her and Blake. But she wasn’t about to dwell on such nonsense.
The female vampire pumped her arms as the wind blew past her. She fought against it as she kept running at her top speed. This is what she needed. A nice run. With no one bothering her. Just her and the forest. Her gym shoes pushed against the ground, as she darted around the trees. The vampire had no idea where she was going or where she planned on stopping. All she knew was that she was enjoying her life for once. Then suddenly it all came crashing down. The scent of another vampire smacked her right in the face. Gwen came to a halt as irritation consumed her. Are you kidding me?! This increase of the vampire population wasn’t dangerous, just annoying. She glanced around her, trying to find the vampire. Might as well get this out of the way.
That’s when she heard a voice come from behind her, it sounded like her name was said. She turned around slightly and saw a male vampire standing behind her. And suddenly the vampire wasn’t ranting. How did he know her name? Wait…he said something about a race? That’s when it clicked in her head. This had to be the vamp that Blake was racing when they ran into each other. “First off, I can’t help it if you two have small attention spans,” Gwen stated with slight anger. “Secondly, where in the hell do you people keep coming from?!” The second part was more rhetorical than anything else.

So first of all, it wasn’t cool to just say that they had small attention spans. That was like tossing a bowling ball at a boy’s face while he wasn’t looking and then telling him after he broke his face that he should learn how to catch and that it was his fault. Of course, it wasn’t exactly her fault at all that they were getting distracted by her, but Cal wasn’t going to acknowledge that. First off, I can’t help it if you two have small attention spans. We.. our attention spans are.. why don’t you go hang out somewhere else so we can finish something for once?! Yea, he didn’t have much of a comeback for the attention span comment but that was because he viewed her as the only real problem in the situation. It was her, not them.
He knew there were a lot of vampires around but things were just getting ridiculous lately. There had to be somebody who could get on top of the population problem but Cal had learned recently that the only thing close to the governing body for blood-sucking freaks didn’t do shit. Secondly, where in the hell do you people keep coming from?! I could ask you the same question! This place is like a vampire tourist attraction. Why the hell Forks.. Forks was so boring. Why was everyone congregating there? If you asked him, nobody else had the right to be there other than Cal and Blake.
As far as Blake went, well he’d have liked for him to be there because Cal and talking just didn’t go well together and it never got him anywhere. Blake would know what to say and he sure’s hell knew what to do when he met Gwen (not that Cal was aware of what went down yet). Cal wasn’t going to get all flirty or anything—he was too repulsed by her for whatever reason. In his opinion, vampires were off limits. They were crazy, and they were assholes who changed people and then left them to fend for themselves. He could hang out with Blake because Blake was different.. but there were no other exceptions.

Gwen rolled her eyes at him as he seemed to search for an answer to her response. If this was Blake’s friend, how did he not have a good come back? Unless the other vampire sucked the sarcasm out of this one. Which was very possible. “Why should I?” she questioned as she slid her hands in her pockets nonchalantly. “You guys don’t own the forest.” The trees were open to the public. It was common knowledge. Then again the two of them didn’t really seem to be very knowledgeable. Gwen didn’t express this out loud, which was slightly weird. Usually she didn’t censor her thoughts. But last time she said whatever was on her mind with a vampire, some interesting things happened. Things that are not acceptable to describe on a PG-13 site.
The female vampire shrugged her shoulders. Yes, why Forks? It was a tiny, tiny black hole on the planet. Nobody that didn’t live in Forks even knew about it. Yet it seemed to be a safe haven for all kinds of creatures. “It can’t be the unlimited supply of food, at least not for you red-eyed vamps.” Her voice held somewhat of a hostile and sarcastic tone. She didn’t mean for it to come out that way. She usually doesn’t mean to sound like that, it just happens. And she was perfectly fine with that. Gwen was too old to change her ways. And way too stubborn to do so. She liked herself the way she was. Apparently some other people did too. So why change?
Blake seemed to enjoy her this way. He thought she was fun. And fun was a term she was willing to settle for. It was better than the other names people called her. Though she deserved all of them. Honestly, she didn’t know how her brother put up with her on a daily basis. Gwen was a bitch, she wasn’t going to deny that. “So…how’s Blake?” Gwen asked trying not to seem too curious. It had been a couple days since their interaction. And she was pretty curious to see if he had told his friend about what happened. It didn’t seem like it. Especially since he had automatically jumped down her throat about ruining their races. If he knew what happened, their race would probably be the last thing on his mind. The female vampire suppressed the urge to smile at the small thought of what happened. It wasn’t like Blake was her mate or anything, but it was a lot of fun. Obviously. Their activity would be fun to pretty much anyone.

It would have been really nice to run into a vampire that was the least bit submissive for once. They all had to be so goddamn stubborn. They were trying to someone claim territory in the forest but it wasn’t going well and other people kept.. walking in it. It really wasn’t cool of them. Why should I? You guys don’t own the forest. Oh no, she did not. You went there. He made sure in his tone that it was clear that her “going there” was not a good idea. Cal wasn’t very good at coming up with witty responses in the heat of the moment unless He was with Blake or he was pissed off. This girl was annoying and all but he wasn’t angry enough to be witty. Yea, it doesn’t make much sense but that’s Callum. We’re working on it, so don’t get comfortable. And by working on it, he meant trying to find a place from which they could steal crayons that would stain the dirt.
There was no reason for people to be attracted to the area, though people were. In her next point, Cal picked up an attitude that was slightly condescending. It can’t be the unlimited supply of food, at least not for you red-eyed vamps. Cal had heard from Carlisle what the significance in eye color was within vampires. Noticing that her eye color didn’t match his, he raised an eyebrow picking up on what she was trying to say. Got a problem with my eyes, Goldie? Cal personally wasn’t crazy about killing humans but he wasn’t willing to go through the agony of learning control only to be rewarded with a less satisfying blood source. I don’t get it. With the wolves on steroids running around, you’d think this place had enough reason for population control. It was one thing to have grown up there and not to want to leave, but with so many shifters around, well.. it really should’ve been a turnoff for vampires.
So Cal didn’t really know much about what happened between Blake and Gwen other than the fact that Blake liked her and spoke positively of her. So…how’s Blake? Cal wasn’t her biggest fan so he didn’t really want to tell her anything she wanted to know. He’d give her a little information but he wasn’t going to sit and talk about Blake. It wasn’t like they had very eventful lives. Probably satisfied with himself thinking he’s faster than me right now. I swear you and trees are the only reasons he ever wins. He looked at her with harsh curiosity.. knowing something had gone on to spark such interest in Blake over her. They met vampires far too often to remember any of them the way Blake remembered her. Blake is fine, and he doesn’t tell me everything. Now she knew.. he didn’t know much about her.

“Went where?” Gwen asked creasing her eyebrows together. She hit a nerve with him, she knew that much. Why, she wasn’t too sure. But that’s usually what happened when she interacted with others. Sometimes she pushed buttons intentionally, sometimes she did it by pure accident. What was with this guy though? It wasn’t like she insulted his grandmother or something. All she did was point out the obvious. Maybe he just felt inferior about not having the power to own the forest or something incredibly stupid like that. “What are you going to do? Find markers that can write in the dirt or something?” Unless they took out some deed that said they owned the Forest it really didn’t matter to the vampire. Or they could hold some territory due to some ancient legends and treaties made up by people before she was even conceived. Though Gwen really doubted the second thing.
Goldie? Like Goldielocks? Seriously? Sigh, these vampires were getting less and less creative as the years go by. There should seriously be some requirements to turning people. Like they should take some test or something. Or better yet, stop turning people all together! That would solve everybody’s problems! “No, red’s actually my favorite color. It’s your diet I have a problem with.” Well it was true. Gwen loved the color red and she would love for her eyes to be red. But of course for them to be red she would have to drink human blood. So yea she didn’t have a problem with the eyes themselves, it was more like the reason behind the color she had a problem with. “Well apparently the wolves aren’t much of a threat to vampires.” A shifter could only kill a vampire if it had back up. Basically they would be mostly effective in packs. But there were two packs running around this area, so yea, you would think that would help with the population control.
“Right, it has nothing to do with your speed or attention span,” Gwen countered in a sarcastic tone. He could blame her this time, but really he could have just kept running and ignored her. So yes it basically comes down to the plain fact that he had a short attention span. Something he got from birth, it had nothing to do with her. Or the trees. “Okay.” Gwen assumed his wasn’t lying. He didn’t seem like that type of person. Then again she’s only talked to him for a few minutes now. She knew nothing about him. But anyways, she wasn’t going to pry. Gwen was not the type of girl to see if a guy was talking about her or pry about what he was specifically saying about her. Though she was curious, like any normal being would be. She was just not going to act on that curiosity. Yup, she had self-control. I mean, obviously, she had gold eyes after all. That was enough of a sign about her self-control.

Went where? Hah. She was funny. It was pretty obvious that the whole territory thing had been a touchy subject for a while since it was so damn aggravating that they couldn’t figure it out. At this point, he was just looking for any reason not to be fond of this girl so she was walking on thin ice no matter what she decided to say. "Nothing—forget it." And at her next comment it became clear that she knew exactly what his problem was… so there was really no reason for her to fish for it. They’d figure it out eventually and that probably wouldn’t matter much if Cal and Blake were going to disagree over who could and could not enter. What are you going to do? Find markers that can write in the dirt or something? Callum was pretty sure writing in the dirt would ruin the marker. The only way to really do it was to hold your ground and force other vampires out… but that would take time and a reputation would have to spread. "Yanno, I’d tell you my perfect plan but I’m pretty sure you’re way too amused over this." He crossed his arms. "We live here. We don’t leave. It’s ours."
Obviously, Cal was extremely clever with his naming and Gwen really should have been slapping her knee over that. He didn’t really know what her problem was. No, red’s actually my favorite color. It’s your diet I have a problem with. He rolled his eyes dramatically. Really? Did she think all vampires learned to be saints? Not all of them could learn control. In fact… most of them didn’t. She was heavily outnumbered. "I see… but the problem is, you wouldn’t like my eyes anymore if I switched… so it’s really better for you this way." He glared into her golden eyes, partially disliking her simply for her strength to keep that control alone. He couldn’t imagine doing that, but he definitely couldn’t be convinced to try it no matter how short the period of trial time. It wasn’t worth the effort. "You’re really going to have to learn to deal with that problem. Hate to burst your bubble, but you’re the outcast. Maybe you’re the one doing it wrong." Obviously though, she was willing to look by the little diet detail for some people. "From the little I heard, Blake’s eyes didn’t seem to bother you that much." If Blake didn’t get shit about it, then Cal didn’t need shit about it either.
Well apparently the wolves aren’t much of a threat to vampires. "Guess not…" It’d be really nice if the damn oversized wolves could be good for something. They really just served as an annoyance for Cal… unless Cal was running along the border that they couldn’t cross. Then, they were pathetic and amusing. Huh, maybe Cal did have a short attention span. He wasn’t going to admit it to Gwen, but he did get bored pretty often. Being in Forks played a part in that, though. Right, it has nothing to do with your speed of attention span. "Whoa, whoa, who said anything about my speed being a problem? Just because I can’t run unless it’s a straight line doesn’t mean I wouldn’t be able to do it faster than you." If the whole forest was one clear straight path, no trees in the way, Cal would be able to maintain speed. It was the damn turning… he’d never been able to handle a sudden change in direction. "I’m definitely too clumsy to be a vampire but that’s all you’re getting."

Fine, if he didn’t want to say anything that was fine with her. Its not like it really mattered to Gwen. She was perfectly happy running through the forest. He’s the one that approached her, not the other way around. She was planning on ignoring me and going about her own business. But he just had to be a woman about this whole territory thing. Well actually he had approached her about ruining a race. Which was, again, not her fault since Blake was technically the one to approach her. This boy was a child and really shouldn’t play the blame game with someone that he could lose to. “You have no idea what I’m assumed by, kid,” Gwen stated in a condescending tone. No she was not alluding any particular event or particular activity…okay maybe she was. But this guy didn’t seem bright enough to catch on to that, so she was in the clear. “So you plan on living in this forest for all of eternity? Right, because that’s smart.” That was severe sarcasm in that last statement. There were many things wrong with staying in this place for forever, and Gwen would happily point them out if it meant bursting his bubble.
“I really don’t benefit either way, I was just answering a question about your eyes.” It’s true. Granted she did it in a very bitchy and sarcastic way. And no doubt could have said it differently and used different words. But then she wouldn’t be herself. And Gwen didn’t really know how to be anybody else. She has tried that whole nice persona thing. It lasted for about ten minutes and then she realized that people were stupid and didn’t deserve the effort. It was that simple. “Hey don’t get mad, because you lack self-control like the rest of them.” Yea sure Gwen was part of the handful of vampires that had gold-eyes. If it wasn’t for her she would probably be in a different place right now. But it was true all those old vampires that say they have so much strength, Gwen would love to see them try to thrive on her diet. They can say human blood makes them stronger and its fun to mess with the humans. That was all true. But when it really came down to it, it was all just excuses for the sole fact that they didn’t want to change or couldn’t. Vampires, like most creatures in the world, were creatures of habit. It’s hard to break that habit when its being going on for, probably, millions of years. Blake? Okay, yea Gwen was being a semi-hypocrite when it came to him. But that was a special case… “Yea well Blake made up for it in ways that you probably can’t.” Yea…this is why Gwen isn’t allowed to meet other people.
“You…I…” for once Gwen was speechless during this encounter. It wasn’t that she didn’t know what to say about his whole straight line thing. It was that she had so many remarks she wanted to say she just couldn’t decide on which one to use. Straight lines? He lives in a forest! There are no straight lines anywhere! And faster than her? Oh please. If anything she could run circles around him. Literally, because she knew how to handle her turns. “I thought vampires are supposed to be naturally graceful?” Gwen mused out loud. This time she wasn’t trying to be mean. No she was actually curious. The girl has probably tripped twice in the last two hundred years. Both times in Forks and both times it was because she had her eyes closed. But she figured with their fast reflexes and enhanced hearing, coordination wasn’t a problem for vampires. Apparently she was wrong. Well this is different. Kind of strange. And of course she won’t admit that she was wrong out loud. Gwen has a feeling a couple people in her life wouldn’t let her live that down.
