Kate had to get out of the house, she had tried to be supportive over the whole death thing. After all the Cullens were part of her family. At least she felt that way. Her sister Tanya had dragged her down to Forks saying it would be very family-like to go visit the Cullens and support them. Especially right now, after they had a death in their family. Edward and Bella had died, it hit the family pretty hard. At least it hit the Cullens pretty hard. Kate never met Bella but heard she was a wonderful girl. The Denali did miss her cousin Edward though. He was a kind person, though he was sometimes a whiny person with all that guilt he had. But he was family, and now he was gone. So the Denali thought it would be a good idea to visit the rest of them. But of course there was oh so much sadness Kate could handle. She was generally good at these things, when her feelings weren’t the same as everyone around them. If Kate was happy and was just an outside party, she was good with it. But since her feelings were the same as the Cullens, it made it hard for her to deal. One would think after a thousand years her feelings wouldn’t be a problem anymore, but no. She was still a female, still crazy.
The Denali tugged at her black turtle neck before walking into her cousins’ backyard. The forest that it was. She grabbed onto the railing and vaulted over it with her one hand. Her black boots crushed the dry leaves when she landed. So her landing wasn’t as graceful or as light as she wanted it to be. But it wasn’t like they didn’t know Kate was escaping from the awkward situation. She made it pretty known by the fact that she never actually came back from getting water. And the way she was squirming, they surely knew it was coming. Kate was usually laid-back, not squirely like she was in there. Katrina loosely tied her blonde hair into a pony tail as she glanced over her shoulder. She didn’t expect anybody to come after her, too busy with all of their own business.
The Denali broke out into a sprint and felt the forest floor beneath her feet. She felt her blonde hair tangle in the pony tail, but she ignored it. She felt the breeze touch her cheeks. Kate really couldn’t tell if it was warm or cold. A down side about being a vampire, your sense of touch starts to go numb. But who needed to feel anymore! Apparently, not her. Kate stopped for a moment to listen to the forest sounds. Grasshoppers chirping, birds singing, the whole world was still revolving not having a clue as to what was going on. Kate inhaled the smells and froze when she picked up a scent that was all too familiar to her. Slowly, she picked up a stone and rolled it around in her hand. If it was the vampire that killed Edward then Kate was surely going to make them feel sorry.
The scent was getting closer as Kate glanced around. Her eyes scanned the trees, where are you little birdy? Come out, come out wherever you are. She paused when she pin pointed the scent. Or when she thought she pin pointed the scent. “Found you,” Kate muttered as she got into a fighting stance. And then chucked the stone into the direction of the scent. She wasn’t really sure if she hit the vampire. But if she did, the vampire would definitely feel that rock. The Denali threw it pretty hard. She didn’t play baseball for nothing.

Somehow, Garrett had never before been to Forks, Washington. I mean, it wasn't exactly on the list of exciting travel spots, but you'd think with all the vampires that seemed to congregate there, it'd have struck his personal interest. And the more he found out about it, the more it did. Right now, though, his visit had nothing to do with his world traveling ventures. He was... actually on his way to attend a funeral. (It had been a long time since he'd been able to say that.) The news of what happened to the Cullens- well, he'd found it out almost randomly. It had been a long time since he'd checked in on them and unlike the coven, Garrett was very much technologically illiterate. Luckily, the Cullens were well known in both the vampire and human communities, so finding them never gave him much trouble when he wanted to. Hearing about the battle in Forks, well it hadn't taken long to put the pieces together. And it was clear they'd been in need of some cheering up.
They were good people. He considered Carlisle one of his closest friends, despite the fact it was a wonder the two of them got along. He imagined the death must have been pretty hard on them, not being accustomed to things like that. Garrett? Well, he'd never had the pleasure to understand. As a vampire, he was very much unattached. He didn't really believe in life long mates - didn't think they existed. That whole "family" the Cullens had created, it was nice, but impractical.. A few hundred years would pass and you'd get bored. (A few months, if you were anything like Garrett.) Fresh cities, fresh faces- that was life. If there was any meaning behind the whole thing, it was a simple one. That was all there was to it. But if you had all of eternity on your side, it was keeping from getting bored.
Garrett wasn't on his guard. He was practically in the veggie vamps' back yard. It wasn't the most threatening of atmospheres. Even with a murderer running around somewhere- eh, he'd cross that bridge when he got to it. That all goes to say, he definitely wasn't prepared to be hit with a rock. And it was a hard hit too. Definitely would have put out a human.. Of course, now he was curious. Following the scent he stopped in front of a blond haired, gold eyed vampire. He'd never seen her with the Cullens, but it wasn't a stretch to guess they were why she was here. Garrett didn't know they'd adopted another one but, hey, learn something new every day. He held up the rock. "Birds are up there, you know" He pointed towards the sky. "Can't imagine what else you'd be trying to get with this." Of course, he very well knew that rock was meant for him. But why be unnecessarily hostile. She seemed to have that role covered. "Is that how you greet everyone, or am I special?"

Kate heard the rock connect with something; she assumed it was the vampire. So naturally she couldn’t help but smile smugly to herself over it. It was a good throw and she had awesome aim, who wouldn’t be proud of that skill? It wasn’t everyday a girl could successfully say they threw a ball and hit their target. Let’s be honest unless they were on a sports team, girls were generally not very athletic. But Kate played baseball on her free time, and that was a lot of free-time. Like, a lot of free time! And she was usually the pitcher, well if her cousin Alice wasn’t playing. So the girl had an arm and every time she hits her target, she feels a surge of smug pride. It had to be a Kate thing, it really did. She didn’t know anybody who would take great pride in simply hitting a target with a rock. Well after a person has been around for thousands of years, something as simple as that would make them happy. So it may not just be a Kate thing…no it was definitely a Kate thing.
And of course the girl assumed right, which didn’t help her ego any. A male vampire stepped out of the trees and Kate straightened herself up. She knew the killer of Bella and Edward was a woman. At least the one running things was a woman, it wasn’t something her cousins mentioned briefly. And this guy didn’t really look like he worked for her. So Kate just totally hit a stranger with a rock, well that’s cool. No big deal! “I think we are both smart enough to know that I wasn’t aiming for the birds,” Kate stated with a small smile. The girl wasn’t a general hostile person, she was pretty laid-back. But she was a bit on edge because of the whole killer thing, so excuse her if she was just trying to defend herself. “Take a lucky guess, come on, I’ll give you three freebies.” Let’s be honest she was relatively sure he knew what her target was. He couldn’t be that slow. Nobody who survived as a vampire was that slow. And she was pretty sure that he wasn’t a newborn, so he did have some years on him. It was only common sense that he had common sense.
“A rock was just convenient, usually it’s a baseball,” Kate joked with another small smile. She was basically saying in a roundabout way that he wasn’t special at all. But she said it jokingly, that clearly indicated that she didn’t normally throw things at people. So no he wasn’t special, and no she didn’t normally greet people like that. Is that clear? Or did we lose you? Kate was obviously not going for clarity in this situation. She looked at the male vampire closely. Male vampires were all the same to her, especially after a couple thousand years. But there was something about this male that caught her attention. It must have been the care free air he carried with him. Or maybe how gracious he handled the rock to the head thing. Either way, Kate approved. Of course she generally approved of everybody. She was a laid-back, tolerant person. And even though every male was the same to her, she still would have their fun with them. Plus what better way to distract yourself from a funeral than having some fun with a stranger. Katrina didn’t even think about questioning him for why he was here. Surely it was for the Cullens, he was in their territory after all. But he was a stranger and would no doubt disappear after this whole thing was over with.

“I think we are both smart enough to know that I wasn’t aiming for the birds,” Garrett smirked despite himself. Maybe it was from being alive back when women were seen as nothing more than attractive property and tended to be submissive, religious, and all around boring; but he loved assertiveness in a woman. Despite that, you'd think he'd be less wiling to be friendly with a person who'd just attacked him... but it wasn't like there was any lasting damage. If anything, it was incredibly refreshing from the mundane greetings he'd been expecting in the small town. A new story to tell. Yes, Garrett, always finding the silver lining. “Take a lucky guess, come on, I’ll give you three freebies.” Well, well, way to make things interesting.
"Well I know you couldn't have been trying to hit me." he teased, flipping the rock around in his hands a few times. For some reason he felt the need to hang on to it instead of tossing it off into the distance. "So it must have been a horrible case of mistaken identity. Ex-boyfriend maybe, but you don't seem the petty type, so I guess the killer on the loose has you a bit shaken up." Again, he was part way teasing her. I mean, she had thrown a rock at a completely innocent person for no good reason. She deserved not to live that one down right away. But she was also right. You didn't spend a few hundred years as a vampire and not pick up some deductive reasoning.
"Baseball, eh? We'll have to play a real game sometime then. I think you owe me that." Honestly, Garrett knew next to nothing about the sport and wouldn't have thought abotu playing it had the opportunity not been so perfect- to see her again, you know; do something fun. The sport itself.. he'd attended a few games out of curiosity's sake. They weren't half bad.. albeit a bit long and dull for his tastes. He was sure being vampires they could find some way to spice things up. "So what's brought you down to this neck of the woods? New Cullen, visitor..?" he waves his hand as to say 'whatever else could possibly apply'. He'd originally believed that Carlisle had turned her like he did the others, but now that he thought about it, she seemed to old to have not been there on his last visit. Of course, he'd never met any other "goldies", so who knew. Clearly, anything could happen.

Generally she would tell him that she wasn’t in the mood to deal with it and walk away. However if she did leave him then she would be going back to a grieving house. Which is something she wanted to avoid. Hence why she went for a run in the first place. Though by now Kate should know better than to just wander around Forks, the capital of supernatural activities. Like seriously, everywhere the blonde went she smelled another creature. Honestly she wouldn’t be surprised if witches and demons started showing up around here. It was like they were on top of hell and it was soothing out supernatural energy. This area was getting ridiculous. There was nothing exciting about it, she had no idea why her cousins decided to migrate here. It was a pin prick on the map next to other cities. Though she shouldn’t’ really talk since she lived in Alaska, in the middle of nowhere. At least you can openly be a vampire there.
“No, I was aiming specifically for you. Guess you lose that guessing game,” Kate shrugged as she smirked at him. The blonde wasn’t the petty type, he was right about that because she wasn’t the dating type to begin with. She had one relationship in her whole life and that was only to satisfy her sister. And the whole thing lasted about two months. Kate wasn’t petty because she did one night stands, she was the girl that left before the alarm went off. Perks of not being able to sleep. Humans fell asleep and she left immediately. And the woman wasn’t going to say anything about the murderer. The guy didn’t look like a newborn that belonged to a crazy red head. And she definitely wasn’t a red headed girl. But there were rumors about an older vampire working with the woman. Though those rumors have yet to be proven true.
“You don’t seem like a baseball kind of guy. Actually you don’t seem to be a guy that likes any sports.” Kate was an okay judge of character. And this guy seemed like Kate’s type. Have sex, leave in the morning, and never seen them again. No judging, Kate did it too. Honestly that made her actually like this guy. At least if anything escalated, she would never see him again. Unless a universal force made them want to see each together. Something strange like that. “I’m here for the funeral. Edward was…like a cousin to me.” There was a slight edge to her voice. She wanted to make it clear that the Cullens were like family to her. And messing with them would be a huge mistake on this guy’s part. And if he was the older vampire that worked with the red head, then he was in for it.

Though Kate never outright said it, it only took one look at her face for Garrett to know that he'd been right. Not to seem full of himself or anything. The fact that she wasn't saying otherwise actually probably helped prove his point. 'Guess you loose the guessing game.' That was fine. It just proved that she did greet people by throwing rocks at them, which seemed like an awfully violent hobby. Goldies were supposed to be all about not hurting people... as far as he knew. Then again, he wasn't really a human, so who knew what was going through her head.
“You don’t seem like a baseball kind of guy. Actually you don’t seem to be a guy that likes any sports.” Well, looked like he wasn't the only excellent judge of character in the area. "I've got nothing against them. They're just a little dull, the way they're set up." So many rules, so small a playing field, the only thing that could maybe be considered a sport that Garrett enjoyed was archery. He didn't even remember where he'd first tried it (or if it was considered a sport) but he had a thing for weapons and the like, so it was hardly surprising. "I didn't really picture you as a sports person either. So what do you do in your spare time?' He'd been right about everything so far, so he was pretty sure he knew where this was going. Then again, there was only so much you could ask a random stranger before they got annoyed. He wouldn't- he was very open. Hell, this was the guy making friends with a human at a collage party in another thread. But he understood most people were't like him. She just seemed like the exception.
“I’m here for the funeral. Edward was…like a cousin to me.” He nodded, understanding clearly what she was getting at. These was a time for humor, this wasn't it. Loss was not completely unfamiliar to him. There was plenty he still remembered from his time in the war. "It's a horrible thing, what happened." I mean, not really but shush. "You have my condolences. I knew him as well." Whether or not she accepted that as proof he meant them no harm he wouldn't know.. and didn't quite care, to be honest. He'd told the truth and it was out of his hands. He'd love to see the person who caused Edward's death be beaten to a pulp and he'd gladly help, but that was a task apparently set aside for another time. Either way, she knew what he was here for now, and as soon as they went back to the house, that would no longer be a question. of course, whether or not they wanted to go to the house and confront the grieving parties..

But not all sports were bad. And back in the day violence was allowed. Well violence was allowed now, but it was more so back then. Back in the good old days. Being thousands of years old kind of had its downsides, like trying to keep up with all these new rules. Humans grew wimpy in the last 100 years or so. It was sad really. “Well when you have nothing else to do during the day, you learn to adjust.” Yes in the middle of Alaska on a Monday there wasn’t much to do. There were only two things. Sports and hunting. And Kate didn’t kill any living creature for entertainment. She would only kill animals when she hunger was too much. Other than that, she left the furry beings alone. And she definitely didn’t kill humans for any reason. Mess with their heads, sure. But never physically harm them. The blonde let a small smile spread along her lips at his next question.
“I do many things…and many people. Mostly men.” There were the few times in the 80’s when Kate wanted to experiment a little with the same sex. But she found little enjoyment in that. She was definitely straight when it came to that department. Only the males had the equipment to satisfy her. And you thought Serena was sexually active. Kate liked sex; there was nothing wrong with it in her mind. It wasn’t like she could get an STD or a baby from the whole experience. She did coin the term succubus back in the day for a reason. But of course, just like every girl out there, Kate did want something permanent. She did want that true love that her cousins and sister had. She was in no rush to get it or desperate to have it. But she did want it and hopefully with the right guy too.
Something about his tone and facial expression made Kate back off. She could tell he was sincere. “Thank you,” Kate stated awkwardly. It was already stated multiple times that she wasn’t good with grief and condolences. “The funeral hasn’t started yet, if you leave now you can catch the beginning of it.” In no way was the blonde trying to get rid of Garrett. Honestly, contrary to her earlier tone, she was enjoying his company. But she wasn’t about to keep a grieving person from their business. Some people wanted to go through the motions of it all. Kate did not. She would be there for her family before and after, kind of. But not during. Funerals never got easier for the girl. Even as a human she avoided them. Kate just loved life so much she couldn’t stand the thought of mourning the loss of one. Especially one that was close to her. So she stayed away from the Cullen house for now.

”Well when you have nothing else to do during the day, you learn to adjust.” ”Either that or you get extremely creative.” Garrett smirked. After all- wasn’t that the way of things? You always had two choices. You could go with the flow or you could redesign the river. Garrett personally found the second option a lot more satisfying. Adjusting meant doing things other people’s way. When it came time for that it meant it was his que to leave. Sure, it would be easier to settle down into a boring routine and accept the rules of the times and the habits of people around him… but that was just no fun at all. And he’d probably go crazy. Of course if you told him now that by the end of this funeral thing he’d be doing it for Kate he’d ask what kind of drugs you’re on and if he could have some. But that was exactly what was going to happen. Of course, just because he would go back with her didn’t mean it wasn’t going to drive him crazy. I mean, Alaska.. of all the horrible places… Okay, I’m done ranting about things Garrett doesn’t even know yet.
”I do many things.. and many people. Mostly men.” Well Goldilocks was just full of surprises. ”Do you, now?” he asked, clearly amused by this realization. ”I knew there was something about you.” Hey we made it pretty far into the thread before the flirting started. Again, Garrett had this misconception in his head that all vegetarian vampires were traditional and moral.. Carlisle and Esme like. But Kate certainly didn’t make him think of a polite, old-fashioned mother-to-be. She seemed very self-confident, kind of feisty, certainly youthful- a lot like a girl who would sleep around. Garrett didn’t have a problem with it, of course. If he did it would be entirely hypocritical. ”You’re a drifter type then… So’m I.” As if it hadn’t been obvious. Garrett also did many things and many people, and he’d had his own fun with experimentation. He believed in trying everything once. Yes, that included his choice in sexual partners and their genders. ”And what do you know, I happen to prefer females.” It hadn’t taken him long to figure out- guys just weren’t as fun. Part of it had to do with the equipment, and part of it just a trait many of them seemed to share. Garrett needed someone who could compete with him.. and there weren’t many guys or girls up to the challenge.
Garrett waved off her ‘thank you’, clearly sensing her discomfort. He’d covered the neccisary part, and that was about as much seriousness as Kate was going to get out of him. ”Don’t mention it. What have I done? I’m happy to have been able to provide a target for you. The company- purly selfish. I don’t believe in leaving an angry woman to her own devices. Bad past experiences.. Well, that and I love to talk. Can't be too picky about to who in the middle of nowhere” Yup, as said, no more seriousness, all teasing. He asusmed she would tkae the jokes fine because she had up to this point and if she didn't.. ah well. She informed him that the funeral hadn’t started yet which.. made him slightly curious (okay, extremely curious) as to what she was doing out here on her own, however- not having received a formal invitation, Garrett didn’t plan on making his appearance until after the funeral (at least the human’s funeral) was complete. ”Oh I’m not going to be good for anything before it’s over. Sentiment isn’t really a specialty of mine. Comic relief, apparently, is where I excel.” The loss hadn’t really affected Garrett personally the way it had the other people who’d be there. Of course, Garrett had every intention of being there for the Cullens, but he was going to be the voice of reason aka move on and cheer up. ”What about you? You’re not going?”

It was something Kate and her sisters came up with. Okay so Kate was the real one to come up with it. But of course her sisters wanted credit for it when they saw how fun it was. And so she promised to give it to them. Of course she will eventually share this knowledge with Garrett. Garrett was also going to be the one man that will have Kate commit to a relationship for forever. Of course Kate does not know this and will never believe this. Garrett was some guy she just met, a guy that she threw a rock at. Not to mention he didn’t really seem like the settling type, much like her. Meaning they were likely to have a one night stand but anything else outside of that was impossible in her mind.
“Got a sixth sense or something?” Kate questioned joking, giving him a sideways look. And so the flirting began. Sooner or later her pants were going to be off and then she would be running away after some coitus. And that would be her having a one night stand with this man. And then she would head back to the funeral where she could keep her composure for a couple hours. And then she would be out on the hunt once more. “Wow, we have ONE thing in common.” Okay so it seemed like they had a lot in common but Kate wasn’t about to acknowledge that for the sake of their social game they were clearly playing. That’s what it was to her, a game. And he was keeping up. Good for him. “Really? Well then it seems we are more compatible than I originally thought.” Okay everybody should know where this thread is about to head. And it will be a huge surprise if it heads that way. And Kate was perfectly fine with that. She really needed the release from this horrible day. This horrible week. Poor guy, had no idea what he was in for. She coined the term succubus for the reason.
“You are a very handsome target that I do appreciate. And I’m not an angry woman, I’m a pissed beyond belief woman.” Kate sighed and looked at Garrett. “So maybe leaving me to my own devices might be healthier for you.” She winked at him and gave him a tense smirk. Kate was pissed that someone would kill her cousin. She was pissed that her other cousins weren’t out trying to find the bitch. She was pissed that she wasn’t there to rip the bitch in half. She was pissed that she was being forced to attend a funeral for her dead cousin and some slut that got him killed. And when Kate’s pissed she does one of two things. She either goes out for blood, hunt down the person she’s pissed at and slaughters them. Or she goes out to drink and have sex with the first person she meets. And angry sex with Kate NEVER ends well for the other person. So she was giving him a perfectly safe out. If he didn’t take it then that was his fault. “I’m sure I can find something else you can excel at.” Yea his window of opportunity is now close. Poor, poor man. “Like you I don’t do sentiment. Honestly I think the whole thing is a waste of time. They should be out looking for the bitch…or getting hammered. Not organizing a funeral for a vampire.” Kate wasn’t holding back now. She pretty much assumed that Garrett would be okay with whatever stance she took. He seemed like the type of guy that would be okay with whatever she said to him.

"There's oh so much room for creativity in Alaska." "Well if you're talking land.." Garrett smirked. That, Alaska had plenty of. In fact, it was just about the only thing the place had going for it. Unless, of course, you were a fan of snow. He was surprised to hear that that was where she chose to live though. Seriously— he didn't understand how anyone could ever live there. Or why they would want to. She was right, the place had next to nothing to do. Garrett couldn't imagine himself lasting a week (boy he was going to be in for it). "Besides, you've got a coven. Some of us are forced to entertain ourselves." Granted, Garrett had never had a single desire to be part of a coven, "family", or any other group of like-minded people (this might have had something to do with the fact that there weren't exactly many people like him out there). Still, he imagined it would make doing things like playing sports much more practical. I mean, what exactly could you play b yourself? Yeah. And humans— fun, but not particularly at these sorts of things.
"Got a sixth sense or something?" "You could say that." Yup, now they were going to flirt. And yanno, with our characters, "flirt" usually involves the removal of clothing and then they were going to have sex and… well, it probably wouldn't be proper to go to a funeral after having sex so maybe they could just go get drunk or something.. Garrett wasn't thinking that far. Right now he was wrapping his arms around Kate's waist and slipping his hands under her shirt. "I'm not an angry woman, I'm a pissed beyond belief woman." "And a very attractive one if I do say so myself." It was extremely evident by this point that they both knew where things were headed. Maybe leaving me to my own devices would be healthier for you." She talked too much. Garrett smirked in reply before pressing his lips against hers. When he finally pulled back he informed, "I'm not really known for good decision making." And now her shirt was being removed completely.
"I'm sure I could find something you excel at." "I have the utmost faith in your abilities." Kate explained exactly why it was that she was running around the forest instead of with her grieving family and friends and Garrett nodded, understanding completely. As the narration covered, Garrett was generally cool with everything people chose to do or say. Whether he agreed or not it wasn't his business how anyone else wanted to live their life. He just expected the same. In this case, however, he happened to agree with her. Mourning someone who get to live a few hundred years… wasn't really solving the problem of the crazy psychopathic killer running around. "What do you say after we finish up here, we go get hammered, and we hunt down this bitch ourselves?" Yes, that whole thing was entirely suggestive. None the less, Garrett meant every word of it. They could go back to the house tonight.. tomorrow.. whatever. They were big kids, they could take care of themselves.
