Dammit, Seth, I’m running out of time! Go! He needed a few more ideas about what to do with Rachel before she got there. The two were in Paul’s kitchen, trying to set up a perfect meal for Rachel as a surprise from Paul. He’d asked her to come by in the early evening so they could hang out and she was always making food for him, so he figured he’d turn the tables a bit. Of course, that was a nice plan involving making food, so Paul wasn’t going to be able to do it by himself. He’d kick himself for it later, but asking Seth was really the only option he had since Seth would both be willing to help and not tease Paul excessively over it (or at least try not to). It wasn’t exactly Paul asking him for the help either, it was more like an order. He had been getting suggestions out of the kid about how to make the room look and what food to make and all that kind of stuff that would hopefully make Rachel happy, but the kid wasn’t coughing up ideas fast enough. In his defense, there probably wasn’t a speed that’d be fast enough for Paul coming from Seth.
The time was approaching for Rachel to show up and Paul was actually slightly nervous (which he’d never admit to anyone ever) so his attitude toward Seth was getting worse and worse. Finally, he lost it and exploded. Okay, you need to leave. When the kid left, Paul scrambled to his room to get the nicest clothes he could find.. which were a pair of shorts that weren’t torn or beaten up and a blue button-up shirt. It was extremely easy to tell when Paul was trying to impress and when he didn’t care, and he rarely tried to impress anyone. Rachel was one of the exceptions. She was perfection, and so perfection was what she deserved. His small house contained no one else at the moment as his father was out on a hunting trip as he always was.
The food could have been better, but it wasn’t bad. Paul had cooked a bit before the whole shifter thing took up the majority of his time. What mattered to him most was that she liked it. He’d really missed her lately with how busy he’d been and he wanted her to enjoy the time they were going to spend together. As he heard her arrive, he ran to the door to open it for her, grinning as she approached him. Hey Rach, he greeted, kissing her lips before backing out of the doorway to let her in.

Rachel flipped a page in her worn out book as she readjusted her legs on the couch. It was nice to lose yourself in literature. To escape reality for a couple of hours or minutes. Just what Rachel wanted to do for years. Just escape. But reality always seemed to weasel its way in there. And she managed to come face to face with all of the things she wanted to run from. So Rachel settled for the brief escapes she can get through literature. Something in the back of her head tugged slightly, was there something she was forgetting? Rach glanced at her phone and noticed the time, it dawned on her. She was supposed to hang out with Paul for the day. The woman set her book down on the table and ran into the shower. How could she forget? Oh lord, well no big deal. She would get ready quickly and make herself look presentable. Rachel wasn’t the type to put on a ton of make-up or dress up on a daily basis. So looking presentable in her terms was a quick process. Even though she wanted to put a little more effort into it since it was Paul see was seeing for the day. He deserved and was worth the effort.
Once the girl was out of the shower, she went straight to her room and rummaged through her clothes. Most of her stuff was just jeans and shirts. There was really nothing to look relatively decent. Not that Paul hasn’t seen her in her normal clothes before, but Rachel wanted this to be different. The two of them haven’t seen each other in a long time and Rachel really didn’t want to remind him that he was dating the socially awkward nerd of La Push. Rachel had managed to find a nice pair of jeans, tank top, and a black flow-y top that her roommate in college made her buy for a party. A party she never actually got around to going to. But of course there was nothing that could replace her worn out gym shoes, so she would have to stick with those for the time being. But it was okay, it wasn’t like she was going to wear her shoes the whole time. Once she was all dressed, Rachel ran back to the bathroom and put some eye make-up on. Nothing that really stood out like most girls had her age. Her unmanageable curls were being somewhat tame today. She managed to pull them all into a decent looking pony tail.
So not that all you thread stalkers needed that play by play (or Lee), but anyways! Rachel walked through the house once more. Made sure everything was clean for her father and brother. She double checked the food she put in the oven and wrote a quick note on how to cook the lasagna she made. Rachel hoped they wouldn’t screw it up and end up starving themselves to death. They really relied on her too much for food and a clean house. One of these days, Rachel was going to make her brother do some chores around here. Though he probably did enough while she was gone, something she had to remind herself every time she got stuck cleaning the living room or washing the dishes. Once everything was set, Rachel ran out of the house and got into her small car. It looked like it was about to break down at any moment.
It only took a couple minutes to reach the Lahote residence. She straightened herself once she was out of the car. Rachel didn’t really know how to handle situations like these, despite the fact that she was head over heels for Paul and knew he felt the same way. She was still nervous when it came to hanging out with him. Shaking herself a litte she approached the door as it opened. Rach couldn’t help but smile at him. She managed a quiet, “Hey” before he kissed her. If it was at all possible her smile grew as she walked into the house. “You cooked?” she asked in a surprised tone smelling the food. Usually she was the one that cooked, or on the off chance that they had money they would get some pizza. “Or did you get help?” Rach glanced up at him, smirking a little. Either way she appreciated it, and thought it was…cute. It was a little weird describing Paul as cute.

Rachel was the only person that Paul actually looked forward to seeing with no strings attached. He didn’t need or expect anything from her aside from her company—that was enough to give him a good time no matter what it was that they were doing. She was so absent of stupidity and every other trait that Paul found to be incredibly aggravating in other people. He didn’t think of their relationship as a forced imprinted one. He considered himself lucky to have ended up with someone who he didn’t have to change himself to love. He’d been capable of loving her before the imprinting thing. As previously stated multiple times… she was perfection.
After pressing his lips against hers, she asked if he had cooked. He smiled and nodded, laughing a little as he responded, mockingly offended. Try not to act so surprised, Rach. I eat nonstop… it helps to know how to provide myself with food. Yours is better, though. Though, she had a right to question it… Paul wasn’t exactly the domestic type, and cooking a meal wasn’t something he often did. He was notoriously too impatient to prepare good food… but the patience wasn’t a problem if the food wasn’t for him. Or did you get help? So I got a tiny bit of help, he admitted with a grin. But it had to be perfect. I couldn’t do that by myself. Anything Paul could whip out on his own wouldn’t have been good enough for Rachel. She’d have deserved better.
So he walked her to the kitchen where the table was set up for the two of them and he was definitely ready to eat. It was going to go well and if it didn’t he’d find some way to blame Seth. Everything was always Seth’s fault. Seth always caused problems and was distracting and we all know that distracting people never do things right so it’d be easy to blame everything on Seth. Anything good that came out of the evening would have been credited to Paul. Paul would only acknowledge that Seth helped if something went wrong. Nothing would go wrong though. It was going to be flawless. The previous Seth ranting was Phips’s fault so let’s just move on from that now. She’s currently talking about things in my room and such so it could have been a lot worse. Anyway, Paul pulled out her chair and started a conversation because talking generally kept people entertained. You look great—how’ve you been?

Had someone ask Rachel a year ago if she would end up with someone like Paul, she would have given them a funny and asked them to elaborate. Because she was, and still is that big of a nerd. But still, Rachel never saw her in a relationship let alone with someone like Paul. Someone so…impatient, volatile, and sarcastic. Yet so caring and kind. Paul was able to, through imprintion, accept Rachel for who she was. The kind, socially-awkward girl that she was. Honestly it would seem like Paul would lose patience with someone like Rachel who didn’t really catch on to social cues as the rest of society. But that’s what for imprintion was for. Though it was explained to Rachel that imprinting only happens when the universe is trying to put two perfect pieces together. So who knew Rachel and Paul would be perfect together though.
Rachel would gladly admit that Paul was practically the man of her dreams. If she was that type of girl. But Paul was the guy Rachel intends on spending the rest of her life with. That she has no problem admitting no matter what type of girl she was. For a second Rachel got legit scared that she actually offended Paul. But then something in her brain pulled out a little file that said it was fake. Her picking up on social cues was getting better, but she was still bad at it. “I thought you were actually offended there for a second,” Rachel mumbled honestly. Paul was able to accept Rachel even with her social flaws so the woman saw no point in hiding anything from him. Then again he really didn’t hide anything from people anyways.
She smiled at Paul sweetly when he complimented her cooking. “Thank you.” Rachel kissed his cheek lightly before smiling at him once more. It was still surprising though. Rach had honestly thought that all boys just learned how to microwave things and that’s it. But her scientific brain knew better than that. All humans learn how to adapt to their situations, meaning men can learn on to properly cook. She was just giving Paul a hard time, because for the first time she was learning how to be street smart instead of book smart. “I appreciate that honesty. But you know, Paul, you could have just microwaved leftover pizza and it still would have been perfect.” Rachel didn’t want Paul to go out of his way for her. She was fine with whatever as long as he was there. And she also didn’t want him to do something he didn’t want to do for her…like ask someone else for help.
Rachel let him walk her to the kitchen, and sat down once he pulled out her chair like a gentleman. Rach had to stop herself from grinning like an idiot at his comment. She wasn’t some silly school girl. “Pretty good, a little busy. I’m trying to find a job and trying to clean up some old college things,” Rachel asked as she shuffled around in the chair. There was nothing interesting going on in her life. It wasn’t like she was a shifter or vampire. She was just a normal human. But she liked it that way. Boring but safe. It was nice being normal when your family was…well, not. “How about you? Is…everything going okay out there?” Rachel didn’t know the exact status of what was going on in her town but she did know that it was something. Something that had kept Paul extremely busy the past couple of days.

I thought you were actually offended there for a second. Paul smiled—he knew she misunderstood stuff like that sometimes. ”It’d take more than that for you to offend me.” Actually, being Rachel, she could probably get in his head more than anyone else could and so she was probably more capable of offending him than most people… but she didn’t need to know that. It was just another thing she’d have to worry about. She kissed him and told him that he didn’t need to go through all that, but he really did. Nothing she could say would make him think otherwise. ”Nah…that would’ve been too easy! I’d rather challenge myself…. But maybe not so much. Maybe if you taught me a little bit, it wouldn’t be so damn complicated,” he stated with a grin. She was good at what she did. Paul could manage to make food but it either wasn’t of very good quality or took a long time to prepare. He didn’t care so much when it was just for him, but if it was for Rachel it needed to taste good and so it was important. Though Rachel had more important things to be doing than teaching Paul how to cook. ”Don’t stress too much. You’ll get hired. Anyone would be crazy to deny you.” She was like a genius after all…especially to Paul. Paul didn’t do the school thing. He’d been in and out of there since junior high had started anyway and so that whole concept was very foreign. He didn’t place school on his list of priorities but he knew it had been very high up on Rachel’s list and that was why she did so well. Paul would probably have a hard time finding a job, but Rachel would be fine. He believed that. How about you? Is…everything going okay out there? Paul nodded, never wanting to share too much about the pack stuff because he didn’t want to worry her, but nonetheless he couldn’t just not talk to her about it. ”It’s okay. I mean it’d be better if Sam didn’t think I was nocturnal but someone’s gotta do the night shifts.” It was just kind of crazy lately with all the new packs running around and you’d think the vampire problem decreased as shifters starting taking over but nope—just more problems. ”But the good news is that the beach is usually clear of shifters.” Patrols weren’t done on the beach (unless like you were Paul and ditched them during the day) so they could hang around the edge of the forest without running into shifter trouble…unless the shifters were doing what they weren’t supposed to. Good to know.

Though it was hard for her to believe. She didn’t exactly know how the whole imprinting thing worked and what it exactly entailed but it seemed like Paul was wrapped around her finger because of it. Of course that didn’t mean Rachel would take advantage of him, she was the most naïve adult out there; she wouldn’t even know how to take advantage of him. Offend unintentionally however, that was something she did on a normal basis with people. Also Rachel was very much aware of how Paul was around other people. Okay maybe not other people, just around the other pack mates. Rach never met anyone outside of her family, the pack, and the one annoying girl she was tutoring. But it seemed like Paul was pretty much in a bad mood any time he did interact with a person. So for him to say it would take a lot to offend him was not a statement Rachel was ready to believe. “I’m not sure I believe you but okay, we’ll go with that.” Again Rachel was up to speed on the whole social thing so she pretty much said whatever sounded good in her mind. Don’t get her mixed up with Emma, she did have a filter and was aware there were some things you shouldn’t do or say ever. But if it sounded okay and was approved in her head, regardless of how it might sound to a socially competent person, she would say it.
“I would teach you how to cook if you weren’t so busy and tired all of the time.” Again it was approved in her head therefore she said it without thinking how it might sound to him. It wasn’t like she said it was a mean tone, but it was true. Paul was busy all the time, so was she, but she would be willing to put time aside for him. To teach him how to cook. Rachel liked spreading knowledge of anything to people, she found joy in it. Unless you are some girl, not naming names, Jacki, that doesn’t want to listen, Jacki, and refuses to accept any knowledge thrown at them, Jacki. Then you would be that person that rips joy out of Rachel’s life. While she would never be a teacher because she doesn’t know how to handle multiple people at once, she still liked spreading knowledge around. It was nice to know that someone could gain IQ points after talking to her. Rachel smiled at Paul, deciding to not point out how her major was biology and there are very little things she could do with that. Of course after college she planned on moving to a state with a research facility and go from there. She had an internship set up and everything. But then she came back home to visit her family and let them know when BAM she met Paul and every single plan she had was no longer possible. Rachel would never ask Paul to move away from the pack for her and she also had a problem with leaving her father and brother without a female figure in their life. So she was pretty much stuck here trying to find a job that had nothing to do with her field. And yet she was okay with that. She had her father, brother, and Paul. The woman was content with her life. She just wished she had known a head of time before setting her major.
“Why doesn’t he have Jared do it or someone else?” Rachel asked curiously. Was Sam picking on Paul? She understood that the patrols played an important role in their lives and was very aware that someone had to take the nightshift. She just wished it wasn’t Paul or Jake. They were always tired and she knew it was bad for their health. Well okay if they were normal human beings it would be bad for their health but still! Rachel didn’t like how it was affecting either of them. Especially Paul. Of course the only other people in the pack were Leah, Seth, Jared, and Embry…and Sam himself. Obviously Sam wasn’t going to take the night shift himself, as the pack leader apparently he was above that. At least that’s what Rachel assumed about his personality and view. Seth was way too young and precious to be alone at night, he could be attacked pedophile! Leah was obviously going to put up a fit and Sam would want her to shut up so eventually she would get out of taking the night shift. Jared is too irresponsible to be left alone on patrol let alone take the night shift. Embry is Jared’s babysitter so obviously his shift would have to match Jared’s. Well then! She was all out of options at this point. “Well then we should hang out on the beach some time, I mean I can’t swim but it would still be fun.” She grinned at Paul happily. Yes, Rachel can’t swim. On top of everything else.

Paul knew how Rachel worked. It didn’t bother him the way she spoke out. She was many of the few people to do it to him. I’m not sure I believe you but okay, we’ll go with that. Paul laughed. He could understand why she didn’t. She wasn’t stupid. ”You caught me…” he admitted, ”but we’re still going with that.” Yea, he was wrapped around her finger, but that didn’t change his personality. He was still stubborn. I would teach you how to cook if you weren’t so busy and tired all the time. That one didn’t offend Paul, but it did make him like slight shit. Slight. He felt bad. He knew Rachel didn’t like the situation. Paul didn’t either, but he couldn’t do anything about it. There were very few people Paul couldn’t defy and Sam was one of them. ”I would let you teach me how to cook if I had my own goddamn free will,” he muttered, not sounding angry, but clearly unhappy about it. He’d gladly learn from her. Nobody else could be a better teacher to him. ”Can you?” He’d make the time if she was willing. He just didn’t want to waste her time. Why doesn’t he have Jared do it or someone else? Paul shrugged. It wasn’t like Sam ever explained himself. ”Jared has the best eyes in the pack. I have the best ears. He’s better off patrolling during the day.” I mean seriously everything just conveniently worked out so that Paul got the shit end of everything. Well then we should hang out on the beach some time, I mean I can’t swim but it would still be fun. Paul smiled. ”It would be. Why don’t we go then?”
