Rachel combed through her old textbooks. She was trying to decide which ones she would keep and which ones she would sell back. The girl no longer had school no most of these books were useless to her. But she did like some of them, rereading them became a hobby for hers. So those that she found true enjoyment from, she was going to keep and others were for the bookstore. Rachel had only kept the books for this long because she was planning on going back to her school for her masters. But that was before Paul, before the whole imprinting thing, before she found out that the shifter myths were all real. Her life had taken a sudden stop and now she was stuck in La Push. Yet again. Even though her dream was to leave, she knew she was stuck there. That was her new reality. Something Rachel wasn’t happy about at first, but her home was starting to grow back on her. And she did miss her family.
Once she was done sorting through the books, she grabbed the ones that were going to go back and headed towards the kitchen. There were only three books Rach was willing to part with. The others were still up for debate. If she couldn’t physically leave La Push then she was going to go on mental vacations. Dropping the books on the table, Rachel glanced into the oven. She had decided to make brownies for her family (and possibly Paul). It was mid-day so there wasn’t any meal she had to cook yet and everybody was out being social. Rachel chose to stay inside, bake, and read. She wasn’t one for the social scene and interaction of people. Especially since she didn’t really have the street smarts her brother and twin had.
Rachel had been so focused on leaving La Push after her mother’s gift she was willing to do anything to leave. And her best bet was trying to get into college on loads of scholarships. So ever since high school Rach dove into the books and stayed there. Of course her twin had gone off to marry someone and move to another state, which left her feeling guilty about her motives. So she went to Washington State, that way she was out of town but not too far from her family. While there she was so used to being in the books, that once again socializing was not a big deal for her. She did make a couple of friends, which was good enough for her. She just didn’t want to give the school any reason to take her scholarships away, her only way to escape her home town.
But now she was here and wasn’t leaving any time soon. So all of those sacrifices for school and education were for nothing. Granted Rachel was content with her personality and honesty wasn’t bothered by her social awkwardness. The girl reached in and poked a tooth pick into one of the brownies. They seemed to be fully baked. She grabbed an oven-mit and grabbed the two trays she made. Rachel knew she would have to make more to satisfy the males of the house, but this was good for now. She turned the oven off and set the trays down on a cooling rack. Smiling at her work, the female turned to the cabinets and grabbed the vanilla frosting and sprinkles. Brownies weren’t really frosted in the normal world. But Rachel had nothing else to do, and it would add to the deliciousness. The female fixed her black tank top, as she rummaged through the kitchen. Eventually she would have to get around to making dinner, but not at the moment. Right now it was snack time for the human. One of the rare times she actually had hunger. The girl was so busy looking for a snack she didn’t hear the door open. Then again she was human and wasn’t really capable of hearing feint sounds from a distance.

It was certainly uncharacteristic for a rainy day in La Push. Of course, things weren’t so regular. Well, things weren’t nearly as regular as Jacob liked to think. Or as much as he tried to anyway. He was a perfectly normal 17 year old kid. And he turned into a monstrous russet wolf. No big deal. It was totally normal. Oh! Not to forget the fact that he had actually started turning into this massive wolf because of all the vampires that started coming into Forks. Yup. Everything is his life was completely and utterly normal. If normal meant the world was going to hell in a hand basket with vampires and werewolves leading the way. Yeah, welcome to the life and story of Jacob Black. To be totally honest, he resented the wolf gene. That was why he had given up the Alpha position in his pack even though it was rightfully his. Of course though, he was certainly regretting it now. Sam was getting an inflated head. The older shifter was constantly using his alpha rank on all of them, and it was getting exhausting. It was taking away their lives outside of the pack. Not like Jake really had one. Sure he had to take care of his dad, and sure his sister Rachel was back in town… but still. He didn’t have an imprint like almost half the pack. Though, he did love someone. Of course the boys were constantly on his tail about the leech lover that he felt so much for, but he didn’t really care all that much. He heaved a heavy sigh, and shook himself to try and dry his deep red fur. Jake’s footfalls were heavy and slow as he wondered back through the forest toward home. Sam had had him on an all-night border patrol. For the third night in a row. Needless to say, school wasn’t going to be an option again today, just so he could catch up on his sleep. He had made the first day at school, and the second… but right now the third just wasn’t happening. Of course, God forbid Sam actually cared about his grades and stuff so he could get out of here. But whatever. Jake would just have to find a way to deal with it. As he neared his house, the giant russet wolf paused to change back into his human shape. Bending down, Jake untied the shorts from his ankle and pulled them quickly on before continuing through the woods. His feet dragged along the ground from pure exhaustion as he walked slowly back to his home. Reaching the edge of the woods, he stumbled out onto his backyard. As he neared the house the smell of brownies wafted down in the air and seemed to wake him up. Not much, but just enough for him to pick up his pace. Ducking in through the back door of his house, Jake followed his nose down the narrow hallway of his home. “HEY! What’s cooking?!” |
he yelled before even getting near the kitchen. It gave anyone in the house (especially his sister cuz she wasn’t used to the whole him being a shifter thing yet) ample warning that someone had entered the house, and therefore, hopefully wouldn’t freak her out too bad. Apparently, his sister had been home today. Awesome. She could make up an excuse for him to stay home from school. Usually his dad did it, but Billy seemed to be out a lot more often all of a sudden. Probably the massive influx of vampires around, which seemed to being turning everyone in La Push into a shifter. There was even a brand new pack in town; one Jake hadn’t had the pleasure of running into yet. He had to change that, and soon. Walking into the kitchen he looked at his sister. “Brownies smell great, Rach,” he said innocently. “Can you do me a favor? Sam made me stay out all night, AGAIN, on border patrol. I’m too tired to go to school. Can you call in for me?” He gave her a sickly innocent smile, hoping she would help him out a bit. If not, he’d have to figure out how to get his teachers off his back and get them to understand that he just had more going on at home. He wasn’t sure if the teachers in La Push knew that they were surrounded by wolves, but what they didn’t know didn’t hurt them. And besides, what was in the pack stayed in the pack. So he certainly couldn’t tell them at all. Rachel managed to find a bag of air in the cabinets after a few minutes of rummaging. Yes a bag of air, because you know there were only one or two chips in the bag alone. Rachel had always thought the one thing in life that was free, was oxygen. Until she tried to buy a bag of potato chips, that she now called a bag of air. With good reason. She grabbed the small bag and opened it. Sure enough there were barely any chips in the bag. What a rip off. This is why Rachel just settled for the cheap store brand kind of chips. At least she wouldn’t have to pay two dollars for air. And it wasn’t like they tasted any different than the normal ones. Her brother and father didn’t seem to realize the difference. And surely they were happy with the sudden influx in change around the house. She sat down at the table and began to munch on the chips, while keeping her eyes on the clock. The brownies about twenty more minutes, not a lot of time passed since she originally put them in the oven. Sighing, she glanced at her textbooks once.
It was going to be hard to let those things go. Her and those textbooks have been through a lot. They weren’t the textbooks that managed to get her through her mother’s death. No those were high school textbooks and she was ordered to give them back. But of course the one time the girl was a rebel it was to steal an English textbook. It had some good poems that got her through the death. Even though Rachel wasn’t very creative and often stuck to sciences and such in school, she did love poetry and creative writing. She liked reading all of those books. Even if the plots didn’t match up with her scientific mind. They were a nice escape from the real world and she often felt a little jealous about the authors’ talents. They could just imagine a whole fantasy world around them, with its own rules and such. At least back then she enjoyed the creativity of it all. Now she stuck to more historical fantasy novels. Trying to stay away from the whole vampire and werewolf stories.
She was living those, kind of. Well her brother was a shifter and her boyfriend was a shifter. Rachel had yet to run into a vampire but believed they were out there after all the stories she heard. And recent discoveries she had made. Though Rachel couldn’t help but feel a little angry at the fact that this fantasy thing was keeping her at home. The one place she would choose not to be. Her eyes flew in the direction of the back door at the sound of her brother’s voice. “Just making some desserts for later!” Rachel shouted from the kitchen. She assumed he would smell the brownies and figure out what she was making. Which reminded her that she still had another batch to make. God, if feeding her brother wasn’t enough of a chore when he was human. Now it was just torture. Though Rachel didn’t complain. As long as it kept her brother from starving that’s all she cared about him. She liked taking care of him, even though she barely showed it at times.
That’s when a thought occurred to her, Jacob should be in school right now. Probably was busy with some pack stuff. Did Sam not consider that he had school and grades to keep up? Education was the most important thing for a child of Jake’s age. Well a human child. Rachel really didn’t have the mentality of a shifter, or of a normal human being. So school was extremely important to her. It was probably because she dove into her studies after her mother’s death so she had to ability to leave this place. Rachel always had a great internal conflict. She wanted to protect and take care of her family; but she hated La Push for it was the place her died in. And those memories you can just not erase. She watched intently as Jake came into the kitchen. “Thanks,” she muttered after his brownies compliment. Her eyes stayed glued on him, noticing the signs of exhaustion on his face. Once again she was having an internal conflict. She wanted Jake to go to school to have the ability of leaving like she did. But he looked so tired all she wanted to do was have him lay on the couch and relax.
Sighing the woman sat back in the chair, “Yea, I’ll call after the brownies are done. Sit down, I’ll make you something to eat.” Rachel stood up once more and quickly looked through their kitchen. It would have to be something fast cooking. Any minute the boy could drop of exhaustion. Mac and cheese? That could work. He could eat the whole box so Rachel would have to find something else for herself. Or she could just munch on chips until dinner time. It wouldn’t be the first time she made potato chips a meal. Oh the life of a college kid, how unhealthy it could be.

The aroma itself made Jake’s stomach gurgle hungrily. Apparently he was a bit more starving than he thought. Then again, he wasn’t exactly sure why he was actually so hungry… oh wait, never mind, he knew exactly why he was so damn hungry. It was the shifter thing. For whatever reason, aside from turning into a monstrous beast, he suddenly came with an equally monstrous appetite. And why this was… well he wasn’t entirely sure to be honest. There was absolutely no way that he could ever eat enough to be full anymore, like ever. Jake could literally eat everything and the kitchen sink, and even then, it wouldn’t be enough and his poor stomach would still growl for more. It had to have something to do with the wolf aging and regeneration thing. Everything was so thrown out of whack for this damn gene, and it was driving him up a wall. Not to mention his alpha. Ugh. That was another story entirely. Sitting down at the table, he smiled gratefully at his sister. Rach was always good to him, though a little socially awkward, but she always really took care of him. Jake regretted being annoyed by her when he was littler and sometimes even now. He actually really had a lot to thank her for. Being the youngest, and without a mother, Rachel was really the one who cracked down on being the motherly figure in the house. When Jake was a kid, he couldn’t stand it, but he didn’t understand it either. He had just wanted his sister back. Becca wasn’t about to do anything around the house though, so Rach did a lot of it. Jake loved his sisters, but personally, Rach was his favorite. Though the whole Paul imprinting on her got under his skin a bit, he was glad she was back home, even though he knew very well that she didn’t want to be. He and his dad were just fine on their own… But then who would call off school for him? He offered her a smile and nodded. “Thanks, Rach, you’re really a lifesaver, you know that?” |
Jake said before leaning forward. He crossed his arms on the table and rested his cheek on them, watching his sister rummage through the cabinets for food. They didn’t have much; a grocery run was definitely in the near future. Possibly even today if he could manage to find the energy. But that was probably going to go about as well as his going to school had gone today. Well, he’d have to just wait and see what it did for him. Then again Rachel’s cooking could pretty much cure cancer. She was a fantastic cook. Jake wasn’t exactly sure where she had gotten that from. Probably Mom. God knew Dad didn’t have it and Jake certainly hadn’t inherited it. Unless Rach was an alien. Or adopted… But whatever she was, Jake was proud (and lucky) to have her as a big sister. He raised his head ever so slightly and watched his sister pull out a box of mac & cheese. “You better share that with me,” he said, laughing lightly. Even though he really was terribly starving, it was no excuse to not let his super awesome absolutely amazing sister not eat either. She had a tendency to do that sometimes. Not eat. Rach was so a college kid all around in that aspect. But Jake felt bad about it too. She constantly was making him and the rest of the pack a ton of food, but rarely got the chance to relax and eat herself. So he was gonna make her today. “Hey, do you want any help, by the way?” he asked, feeling bad that he was pretty much making her wait on him today. It was the least he could do, especially when she was going to be a lifesaver and call off of school for him. There was definitely no way he was going either way, but at least he wouldn’t get too much heat if she called for him. Rachel let out a soft laugh and shook her head at Jake’s statement. When he was a kid Jake was so annoyed with Rachel. The girl knew it was because he wanted a sister not a mother. Well he wanted a mother, but he wanted their actual mother. But Becca wasn’t much help, she liked to party and do her own thing. Hence why she got married and moved to Hawaii. Rach was the only responsible one. Granted Jake was too young to understand what was going on. And it wasn’t like they were missing a father, they were missing a mother. So Rachel reluctantly took on the role. Despite the fact that her siblings would get severely annoyed at her and not talk to her on occasion. But Rach took it in stride. Rachel, at a very young age, had to learn to be the good guy and the bad guy. She had to be a mom, mediator, cook, and student all in one. No wonder she was socially awkward. Something was going to fall through the cracks and unfortunately it was that.
She tore through the cabinets before finding that mac & cheese. “I think I should go grocery shopping today,” Rachel mumbled to herself. She turned to look at Jacob who was resting his head on the table. “I would ask if you want to come with but you should probably get some rest little brother.” As much as Rachel would love the company and such, it was not going to happen. One Jacob was a boy and couldn’t grocery shop to save his life. It was a miracle him and dad were still alive by the time Rachel came home. Though she did visit on breaks every now and then. And two Jacob was half asleep now. He was no doubt going to fall asleep in the store if she made him come with. He should really get his rest. Especially since she was calling him off of school to do so. There was no reason to torture the boy further. Though some small part of her, the little sisterly part, wanted to make him suffer for not going to school. Why should he enjoy his day off? But Rachel wasn’t going to give into that.
Rachel whipped her head around and gave him a surprised look. “Share? This whole thing is for you,” Rachel stated and then added, “ridiculous shifter.” She chuckled a little before she began to boil some water in a pot. Once the water started to boil, she began to pour the noodles into the pot. Some steam when in her face as she stepped back. Rachel quickly went to the fridge and grabbed some milk. She poured a little into the pot with the noodle and added stirred. It was her way of making the dish. After years of cooking Rachel learned how to do things her own way. It didn’t matter though because through a lot of trial and error she managed to be one of the best cooks in La Push. Or so her family kept telling her. Had her mother still been alive this would be completely different. She wouldn’t have burned as much food as she had in the past.
Rach quickly took out the brownies before the burned and turned off the oven. Again she gave her brother a surprised look. “Not from you, no offense Jake, but I rather not risk the kitchen.” Rachel has seen her brother and her dad cook. And while she was being over dramatic with the whole risking the kitchen thing, she wasn’t going to count out the possibility. And really, all she wanted him to do was sleep and get better. He wasn’t sick but he looked like it. Rachel turned back to the cabinets and found a bag of chips. “Found my lunch!” She waved the bag in the air and turned her attention back to the mac and cheese. Rachel was very much used to the whole eating a bag of chips and random things you find around the house. It was how she survived most of her nights in college, you know while she ws too busy studying to cook for herself. Or anything of the sort.
