Katrina narrowed her eyes as the scent of a wolf hit her nose. Ah ha! Her prey. Her food. The female vampire crept slowly in the snow. She kept the smirk from increasing on her face. Kate shed her jacket slowly and silently. Her body tensed as she ignored the dry feeling in her throat. She sprang up to her feet and tackled the beast into the snow. The blonde straddled the beast, placed both hands on its head and quickly jerked it to the right. The body went limp underneath her. The female vampire slid slowly off the wolf and knelt in the snow. “Sorry buddy, it was time,” Kate stated slowly as she petted the corpse. Animal or human Kate hated taking a life. Seeing that light go from their eyes was very painful to watch. It was one of Kate’s weaknesses. Her damn conscience.
The Denali’s body tensed as she pulled her long blonde hair back. Her teeth slowly sunk into the neck of the wolf as she drained the body of every drop of blood. The warm and tasty liquid filled her body and made her feel powerful. It was nice to have food in her system for the first time in weeks. Her niece had died recently and the whole family had been upset over it. None of them were really eating lately. And finally Carmen was sick of it and made them go on a coven hunting trip. Everybody but Kate went. She had convinced them to let her stay home and sulk on her own. Plus someone needed to watch after the house, made sure it doesn’t burn down or get destroyed. It wasn’t like the woman and the girl were close, they rarely spoke. But Ella was part of her coven and that was enough to depress the vampire.
Once the wolf’s body was drained completely, Kate yanked her teeth sharply on out of the neck. She wiped her mouth with the back of her hand, making sure to clean off any leftover blood. The female vampire sprang to her feet and walked over to her jacket. The kill was still not enough to make her feel better about Ella. Kate tried telling herself multiple times that she was just some tiny girl, that she didn’t even know her. But Kate had so many plans for the girls, so many things she wanted to teach her about play with men and hunting. Ella knew how to hunt but it was still nice to think she could be like a mother figure. But Ella did start causing lots of plans towards the end. Stupid Volturi.
Kate fastened her jacket on her, glanced back at the body, and sprinted off in the direction of her house. Her feet pushed violently against the ground as she rushed through the trees. She dodged a giant tree as she came up on the driveway. Her pace slowed as she walked up onto the porch. Nothing better than an empty house, a full belly, and an endless collection of comedy movies to cheer this vampire up. She walked into her house, threw her jacket onto the floor. She had the house to herself for the next couple of days, so it didn’t matter how dirty the house got. The female vampire was about to throw herself on the couch when a familiar scent hit her nose. Katrina tensed as she felt shocks trail down her hands. The vampire crept over to the front door, her power increasing ever so slightly. Raising her right hand, Kate yanked opened the front door. Surprise struck her at the guest standing on her porch. “Alice? What?” Kate questioned.

The surroundings were bleak at best. She couldn’t understand why her ‘cousins’ lived so far out in the middle of nowhere. Well it probably had something to do with the fact that no one bothered them. They didn’t have to worry about being looked at strangely or having to move every so often in order to keep their appearance. Alice loved the ‘normalcy’ of her life though. Even though school sucked (that much never changed) and there were things that she did over and over again, she loved being able to go out and converse with people. Although many people thought she was strange, she wasn’t one to be super shy when meeting someone. It wasn’t long before she reached the outskirts of a forest. Thankfully, the wind was blocked here and not nearly as cold and it could have been. Though it was still completely freezing, not like it bugged her much, it was kind of an annoyance though. She slowed her pace a little in the forest, taking her time to actually think about what she was doing and why she was here. She had had a vision of the youngest Denali getting killed by the Volturi. Of course, Alice immediately thought of the rest of the Denali clan up in Alaska. Though she hadn’t been able to get them as quickly as she would have liked because of school, she still felt the need to go up and offer condolences and make sure everything was okay. The loss was felt not only by the Denali’s but the Cullen’s as well. As Alice wandered through the forest, the smell of blood reached her nose. It surprised her, and she ran off in the direction. Stumbling on a clearing, she noticed the body of a wolf in the middle. Though he looked like he had just fallen over dead, Alice knew better, instead checking around the body itself. There were a couple impressions, ones the wolf couldn’t make himself, and once she checked the body, it was completely drained of blood. Standing and sighing, she looking in the direction of the Denali home, knowing well that this was the work of one of her cousins. At least she knew someone was home. Continuing through the woods, Alice ducked in between and around trees, moving quickly and gracefully without a faltering step. It only took her minutes to get the rest of the way to the house. She stopped outside the clearing where the house was built for a moment, and sucked in a deep breath. She continued slowly, walking gracefully up the steps and onto the porch. Alice only had to wait a moment for her cousin to answer the door. No doubt she had smelled her when she stopped in front of the house. Alice looked remorsefully at her blonde cousin, her surprise very apparent on her face, so the smaller pixie tried to give her a smile. “Hey Kate,”
|
Alice said softly. “I saw what happened… I’m sorry about your niece. How are you and the rest of the coven?” She had to ask. Alice was that kind of person. And she could honestly say she loved her cousins. It was just a matter of time before they would have to talk about the subject anyway. Either way, Alice could see no way around it, so she figured she would start with it and get it out of the way. Then she and Kate could talk about whatever. And hopefully, Alice would be able to cheer up the other girl a little bit. Kate sucked in a breath, of course Alice knew about that. The blonde quickly reminded herself of her cousin’s power to see the future and stuff. Though it would have been helpful to get a heads up about it. Maybe it could have been prevented. Though Kate highly doubted it. Not to mention the Denali’s weren’t exactly being great cousins to the Cullen’s lately so she should just be glad the girl was here now. Though Kate couldn’t really be happy about anything at the current moment. But that didn’t matter. It was just a phase in the epic tale of being her. Katrina has lived a very long time on this planet, she was thousands of years old. So she knew that this pain was going to less and eventually disappear. After all she wasn’t exactly close to her niece. They hung out a couple times but that was it. Ella usually kept to herself and then kept to the guardsman when they had their whole thing. So Kate never really interacted with the girl.
The Denali was actually more upset about the fact that she had all these plans to hang out with the girl; she never got the chance to do any of them. It was like Kate would have a pseudo daughter of her own. She had all of these plans to ‘corrupt’ the girl. Show her that she could have fun and still be a bad ass vampire like herself. But that never happened. Kate knew a long, long time ago that she would never have kids or build an actual family with anyone. But she still dreamed about it every now and then. Though to be honest, living as a vampire for this long made a girl realize that sometimes a child wasn’t everything. Being a vampire was awesome. It had its many perks, perks that she couldn’t have if she were to magically become a human to simply push a child out of her body. Even though Kate would love to raise a daughter of her own, she rather be the being she is now then a weak human that had to suffer nine months of pregnancy.
“We’re…we’ll be fine. She kind of kept to herself so I wasn’t really close to her. It’s just weird having one less member in the coven,” Kate stated honestly. That was the truth though. Sure her sisters were probably having a worse time adjusting to it then she was. But Kate was glad it wasn’t one of them, honestly. Plus Kate wasn’t the type to dwell on all of that negative stuff, even as a human. She was the awkward person in the corner of the funeral ceremonies. You know back in the day when they either burned the body or shipped them off to seas. Kate sighed and took a step back. Where were her manners anyways? “Thanks for stopping by though.” She awkwardly patted Alice’s shoulder and smiled at the girl. Yea, she wasn’t a touchy feely person either. Kate was awkward when it came to the whole hugging and comforting thing. She seemed like a very cold-hearted person. But she really wasn’t. Kate had a heart of gold and would do anything for her family. She knew they knew that, why should she have to visibly show them that? Surely years of protecting them was proof enough.
The day was young and nobody was home. Kate wasn’t going to send her cousin away after she traveled this far up north to be an awesome family member. “Come on in,” Kate stepped aside and gesture for Alice to come inside. “The rest of them are on a hunting trip so I could really use the company. Make yourself at home, cuz.” The blonde walked back over to the couch and sat down. Assuming the position once more. Maybe the two could have a girls day or something. Like those girls in the movies that just hang out, gossip, and eat junk-food. Only without the junk-food part since it just tasted nasty to the vampires. Oh! Movies! Why didn’t Kate think of that before? She should have put on a movie earlier. You know when she was bored out of her mind and just stared at the ceiling. Okay so maybe living for thousands of years got boring after a while.

Really she shouldn’t have been. She had a habit of dropping in unexpected on people. People should have had visions like she did; it would make everything a hell of a lot easier for her. But she sometimes forgot that she was one of the special ones. And vampires didn’t all have the same powers. So Alice was one of a kind in that department. All the same, she knew it should have been more of a surprise to her that that Kate was so shocked. Honestly, Alice should’ve known she would have thrown her cousin off a little bit. Of all the things her sight helped her with, that wasn’t exactly one of them. Alice tended to have a blindside toward people’s reactions to her… eccentric ways.
She smiled slightly at Kate. The very least Alice could do was tone herself down a bit for her cousin. Nodding in agreement, Alice sucked in a sharp breath. She didn’t need it at all really, but somehow the notion felt grounding in a way. It made her feel a little more normal. “I know what you mean…”
|
Alice said quietly. She did sort of, but not in the extent that Kate knew. “When Edward left, it was a weird feeling. I know that isn’t the same as loosing someone for good… but, I know what the weirdness feels like…” she said, trying to be helpful. Alice knew that she would never fully understand what Kate was going through. But she thought it may help to get some sort of common ground with each other. It would probably definitely help keep everything running smoothly tonight. Alice allowed herself a grin at her cousin. Good enough! “It’s not a problem,” Alice answered. Her smile turned a bit sheepish. “Actually, I probably should have called to let you know I was coming… that’s my bad.” Her voice was apologetic. Again with the whole thinking ahead thing. It was still kind of a funny concept to Alice, even though she did it with life-or-death situations and at random moments all the times. It was a weird thought to her in all honesty. But that was kind of beside the whole point of this right now… Or was it?? Smiling slightly at Kate, Alice follows her cousin inside and nodded. “You sure? I don’t mean to intrude or anything?” she said hesitantly, still standing in the doorway of the other vampire’s home. She wasn’t totally sure what she was going to do. She looked at Kate for a moment. As Alice remembers, her cousin loved to hunt. Well more so she liked the excitement anyway. Was it that the death had affected her just that much? Or just that she was a lot like Alice sometimes? Sometimes Alice just flat out wasn’t hungry. Especially as of late. These past few weeks Alice had been too stressed out to have any kind of appetite at all. Smiling at Kate, she slipped her shoes off at the front door. “Thanks, cuz!” she answered with a smile and followed Kate to the couch. She sat down and curled her legs up underneath herself. “So how’ve you been? We haven’t seen each other in quite a while!” Alice said with a smile. Her voice was a little distant and dreamy. She liked talking to her cousin. She hoped Kate didn’t mind her staying and chatting for a little bit. Maybe they could even have a girl’s day for once. Not like they hadn’t before, but that was quite a while ago. “Yea, well what can you do? It’s not like we can fight the Volturi,” Kate shrugged nonchalantly. She was probably treating the death of this girl more lightly than she should. But Kate wasn’t one to dwell on something like death. She’s lived a long time. A hell of a lot longer than her cousin standing before her, so death was something she was used to. After thousands of years, one learns how to build immunity to the feelings of death. It was like she was numb to it. Though Kate didn’t let herself stop feeling entirely. She needed to feel other things. Otherwise an eternity would be a long and boring time. There were other feelings out there other than sadness and anger. The thought of this kept her spirits up and made it possible for the vampire not to be like all the rest of them out there in the world.
There were so many other emotions to feel out in the world. Like happiness and love. Though Kate had yet to feel the latter. The blonde had yet to be in love or finding her lifelong partner. Honestly, she was more okay with that than her sisters were though. They all wanted to find love and be with that one guy that they can’t live without. Kate was perfectly happy being single. At least that’s what she told herself every morning and night. She loved flirting and messing around with males. It was super enjoyable. But there was a small part of her that wanted to feel that epic love. At this point she was relatively sure there was no one actually out there for her. If she hasn’t found someone now, then she wouldn’t find anyone. A concept she accepted years ago. Being single was fun.
“Yea, a phone call would have been nice,” Kate stated jokingly. She didn’t mind the random stop by from her cousin. It was nice seeing someone outside of the Denali clan. But in this instance a phone call would have been good. At least Kate could have time to plan something for them to do. Or have time to clean herself up. Despite the whole vampire beauty thing, Kate looked pretty much like a bum at the moment. She was a beautiful bum though. Her sisters and her didn’t coin the term ‘succubus’ from nothing. They were extraordinarily beautiful and powerful. Honestly society would probably prefer them with sweats on, so some people could have a fighting chance. Well the male society would prefer no clothes at all.
“Mi casa es tu casa,” Kate recited from her memory. Kate was relatively sure that was correct in Spanish. Honestly the girl knew Italian, Russian, and French. But she never really learned Spanish, well until recently. She just started discovering the internet and the wonderfulness it brings. Such as online classes for Spanish. Of course keeping her grades up was hard when she had zero motivation to actually do any school work. There was no point in going to school really when you thousands of years old. But whatever. That’s why Kate didn’t bother officially transferring to any other school. Other than the small Alaska one that she was nearly failing out of. Not that she was stupid, just unmotivated and bored. The blonde grinned when her cousin joined her on the couch. “Minus the recent death? I have been good. I just dumped my one month boyfriend, he was getting too clingy.” It was all jokes with Kate at this point. Kate had been in one relationship in her entire life. And it was for a year, hundreds of years ago. And the whole time she was with him, she was flirting with other guys. The only reason she was with him was to satisfy her sister’s need to have boyfriends at the same time. Something Carmen is very much over at this point.
