Willow tapped her pen against her chemistry textbook. She stared intently at the ion page for a good five minutes before sighing in defeat. This was just not sinking in. Chemistry was so boring and monotonous. Her eyes made a sideways glance to her clock right next to her. Twenty minutes? “I think that’s enough studying for one day!” Willow cheered as she slammed her book shut and jumped off her bed. Now it was time to do something outside. Like go to the beach! Oh, Will hasn’t been to the beach in long time. Two whole days was a long time! Willow missed the smell of the ocean, how the breeze felt on her skin and in her hair. Grinning at her new plan, the female grabbed her Ipod and quickly made her way down the stairs. She glanced around her small living room; both of her brothers were out for the day. None of the siblings really spent time together anymore, something Will wasn’t very happy about. But she had to suck it up for the sake of bills and college funds.
The female pulled on her black pea coat and combat boots, before leaving the safety of her own home. She untangled her earphones before putting them in her ears. Willow blasted her music as she made her way down the driveway. Lucky for her the beach wasn’t that far from her house. Will danced her way down the street, ignoring the fact that she was probably going to go deaf from her ear buds one day. But she didn’t care. Swimming and music were her two favorite things in the world. Next to her brothers. But of course they didn’t count because they were family and she had to love them be default. Willow smiled as Luke Bryan sang wonderfully in her ears. The female let the music take her as she continued to dance and clap her hands all the way to the beach. Anybody who caught site of her would think she was nuts. Which she was and didn’t think otherwise.
Willow was always the ‘sober-drunk’ type of girl. She didn’t care what others thought, she was confident in her abilities—or lack thereof—to dance. She was the one at parties that got up and danced when no one else would. She liked to have fun. Which was probably why she made friends so easily. Between her fun nature and outgoing personality, people were drawn to her. At least that was her eldest brother’s theory. Her second oldest brother just thought it was all in her head and half the friends she talked about were made up. Which was also plausible at this point. She was just that crazy sometimes. “Whoo!” she exclaimed as she kicked up her foot. She silently giggled at herself as she rounded a corner and finally made it to the beach.
Taking a deep breath, Willow sucked in the salty scent of the ocean. She grinned as she walked over to the shoreline. If it wasn’t cold outside, she would have taken her shoes off and let the water soak into her skin. Damn weather! Willow slowed her dancing to a light sway as she walked down the shoreline, her shoes getting wet as the water came and went. Like a steady heartbeat. She stuck her hands in her pockets as she quietly hummed the songs that played on her Ipod. Her eyes got lost staring at the ocean. It was so peaceful and calm. Skipping chemistry was worth this. This moment. Music, water, sand, and just peace. It was beautiful. Willow, being the human was, had her music too loud to hear anybody approach her. And even if she didn’t have her music, she was too lost into thought to even pay attention to the outside world.

And a relatively new one at that too… Keisha wasn’t entirely sure. She had been so busy that she just realized it was in their living room. That little information tidbit had kind of slipped right by her. Not like she really cared or anything, but it was one of those details you’d think someone would notice. Course, she’d been pretty busy. Alpha stuff kept her near home and dealing with the outside stuff, rather than her own pack. Not necessarily a good thing but she delegated pack matters down to Devon, who wasn’t exactly thrilled with it all, but that didn’t really matter. At least to Keisha it didn’t. The other girl wanted the beta position without the work. Well that wasn’t going to happen. Devon was going to earn her keep in the beta position even if it was little by little. Either way, Keisha was putting her to work.
Today held nothing in particular for the alpha female. So as she watched the local channel on TV, she tried to decide what exactly she wanted to do. She didn’t want to sit around all day, though it was drizzling slightly outside. Keisha didn’t care in the slightest though. She couldn’t stand to stay inside left to her own memories. It would certainly be the death of her in no time at all. Getting up swiftly, she flicked off the TV and shot up to her room. She rummaged around a little bit in her room, finally pulling out an old iPod. She had stolen the iPod from a pretty shady vendor a few years ago, as a rest for the obnoxious rituals of her beta. Don’t get her wrong, Keisha loved her beta, but sometimes Dev was a little much to handle. So Keisha stole an iPod to help tune her rampages out a bit.
Walking back down the stairs, she scrolled lazily through her songs. She didn’t have much. But what she did have was surprisingly fairly recent. Keisha liked the beat for the most part; now-a-days she would be considered a club-girl. Whatever. She didn’t care much. Picking her song she moved down her front hallway, by-passing her shoes, and walking straight out the front door, not bothering to lock it behind her. No different to her really. Someone would be home soon anyway. She vaulted over her porch railing and sprinted off into the forest.
The drizzle filtered off through the leaves becoming a mist. The ground was soft and smooth against her bare feet. The beat of the music mingled with her own footfalls as she rushed through the forest. Keisha launched herself over the underbrush, and ducked around trees. Her speed mounted as she continued through the forest. She didn’t have a set destination in mind, but she was heading deeper into La Push. Keisha was also aware that by instinct she was following the cliff line toward the beach. Alright good enough she figured. She continued to run, moving quickly and soundlessly through the forest. She was really hoping to not run into any of Sam’s pack today. Sure they were pretty cool and everything, but she would really just rather not deal with it today.
It wasn’t much longer before the ground started to soften, and she broke through the tree line at the beach. Jumping over the last bit of underbrush she landed easily in the sand, looking out across the beach. It was empty, of course, because no one wanted to go to the beach in the rain. Her heartbeat quickly in her chest, pumping happily after her run. Keisha’s breath was deep and heavy, but she wasn’t panting yet. Taking the moment to cool down, she walked from the point where she had stopped out and on to the beach. She pulled her iPod out of the back pocket of her shorts, looking down and changing the song. As she walked, she glanced up to find a girl a few yards in front of her looking whimsically out at the ocean. As Keisha neared, she raised an eyebrow and pulled one of her ear buds out of her ears. She watched the girl as she neared, and when the girl didn’t turn or acknowledge her, Keisha stopped. Raising her voice to be heard over the ear buds in the other girl’s ears, Keisha said, “Hey, you alright?” |
She wasn’t sure if the other (human Keisha realized) girl had heard her, but if she didn’t then Keisha would continue on her way. Her black hair swirled around her, feeling nice and soft against her skin. The water felt nice against her skin. Welcoming and comforting. All the world’s problems vanished as she floated there, perfectly content in the middle of the sea. Her brown eyes opened the water not stingy at all, to her delight. She saw the colorful surroundings. The fishes that swam around her body, touching her exposed skin. A giggle escaped her lips, making her realize she could breathe and…giggle under water. She grinned as she began to swim forward. She had no idea where she was swimming to. She just wanted to swim, wanted to be free. The water felt so nice. All of her problems vanished. No thoughts about her dead parents, her family’s money problems, school, work. All of it vanished into thin air as she swam. That’s why she liked swimming so much; it was an escape for her. It made her world clear, everything set her mind straight. She couldn’t explain it; she was tied to the water somehow.
But none of that was real; it was all in her head. Willow had been daydreaming about swimming in the ocean for who knows how long. But due to her human like senses, she didn’t hear or smell the person walk up to her. Though she heard a faint voice asking if she was alright. Will slowly turned around and let out a squeak of surprise at the sight of the blonde. That was odd; usually Willow was very calm and not skittish in the least. So she was a bit shocked by the noise that escaped her lips. The blonde got the jump on her. Probably because she was so into her world that she expected a fish to be standing next to her. Though fishes don’t really stand, nor do they really live on land for long periods of time. And last time she checked fished weren’t leggy or blonde. Or Barbie doll like. There was a first time for everything though! Maybe she was a shape shifting fish! Like werewolves, only a werefish. Could werefish live on land? Maybe, like for a certain period of time. That would be cool.
The black haired girl took her earphones out and nodded. “Yea, I’m fine. Just thinking about what it would be like to be a werefish.” She nodded yet again as if to affirm this silly statement. The other woman would probably think she was crazy. Oh well, at least the human was honest. It wasn’t like she was thinking about anything complex. Like the meaning of life. ‘Ain’t nobody got time fo dat,’ Willow thought with a very southern black woman accent. Not to be that person, but let’s be realistic about how any person would read that. Being a human that has seen death, Willow knew the meaning of life. Living is the hardest thing a person can do, and everyday makes a person stronger. Maybe less sane but stronger nonetheless. Live every day without regret, that’s how Willow did it. Which is why the meaning of life was not something she was going to waste time on. Will wasn’t one of those girls to be like ‘what’s be purpose in life?’. She never was. She was perfectly happy being a typical college girl. Well a very random and eccentric college girl.
Willow’s eyes traced over the blonde standing in front of her. She seemed so familiar like she has seen her around before. There weren’t many pale, blonde girls running around the reservation. So Willow should recognize her. Then again she could have seen her around her school. Willow was a people person so she talked to many people on a daily basis. This girl could be one of those that she talked to but didn’t mentally file away a name. Or she could work with her second oldest brother at the mechanic shop. And it was then that it dawned her. She had seen her at the mechanic shop when visiting her brother at work. Well not so much visiting as bothering him out of pure boredom. Her oldest brother worked in an office in Seattle, so visiting him was out of the question. So she settled for bothering her mechanic brother, Ethan. And also because Ethan was easily provoked. Willow was so mean to her brothers.
“Not to be a creep, but I recognize you. Do you know a Ethan Carmichael? Maybe?” questioned Willow. “Well maybe you don’t his name since he’s generally quiet and tends to be socially awkward, unlike his awesome sister.” Ethan was the exact opposite of Willow. He was socially awkward and didn’t like talking to other people. He liked to be behind the scenes, where Willow was an outgoing leader. One that knew how to talk to people and enjoy talking to people. Which is why the two rarely got along, and Willow was so good at pressing his brother’s buttons. Their older brother was a pure saint to put up with them. How else would he put up with those two? Especially Willow, wasn’t exactly an angel an school or when it came to rules. She was very social and a blooming leader, but other than that Willow was a pretty stressful sibling.

But then she started to turn and Keisha took the slightest of steps back. The squeak from the other girl made Keisha put her hands up and offered a small smile. She waited only a moment for the black haired girl to take her head phones out. Keisha looked at the girl after her strange comment. Taking a moment to digest it, she looked out at the ocean seriously considering this statement. She then looked questioningly at the girl beside her. “Would they be able to live on land?” |
Keisha asked, a small smirk flickering quickly across her lips. Actually the idea was rather interesting. But on the other hand, being a wolf was clue enough. Though the girl looked like a native, Keisha couldn’t be entirely sure she knew about the whole thing. But then again if she did, she would hardly be musing about werefish. Though the thought was an interesting one, Keisha and the other girl would have to muse more about this later. But Keisha looked at the girl for another moment. She didn’t remember where exactly she knew her from, or if she really even did. But her features looked vaguely familiar. But then again Keisha could have had her mixed up with someone from decades ago. Or she could have just been someone Keisha had seen in passing once. To be honest, the blonde couldn’t be totally sure. Besides, there was quite a bit of room for marginal error on Keisha’s behalf. There was also no real way of knowing either unless the other girl remembered Keisha as well. So they would just have to see. The other girl started to speak again hesitantly and Keisha looked at her again. OH! So that’s what it was. She had been picking up on the resemblances between the two siblings. Keisha had gotten relatively good at that, seeing as Pete and her looked fairly alike. She smiled and nodded once. “Don’t worry, I’ve run into way creepier people,” she answered with a laugh. “Yeah… I know Ethan… I think I’ve said like ‘hi’ to him at work, but that’s about it.” She laughed at the other girl’s comment. She nodded. “Yeah, he definitely isn’t a talkative one,” Keisha agreed, amusement more than a little obvious in her voice. Grinning at the girl, Keisha offered her a hand to shake. “I’m Keisha Catori,” she said, with a small laugh. Without losing her smile she added, “I take it you’d be the awesome sister, huh?” Keisha already liked the girl. She was out there and seemed like a lot of fun. On the plus side, Keisha could do with some friends. And she needed someone who could remind her how to be a human again. The downsides of living as a wolf for so long. You missed a lot of human tendencies. Even worse, wolf habits carried over into her now human self. As far as it went right now, she had been doing an alright job. Looking back out at the ocean, Keisha thought about the previous topic. The whole werefish thing… It made her really think. Especially because there were things like her, wolf shifters… werewolves… they were already out there. Who was to say there weren’t other things out there? Well okay, maybe not werefish, but other shifters? Fish could be included in that. Who knew really? Keisha had yet to come across anything like that, but who knew? They could be out there. She didn’t look at the other girl when she started to speak, and her voice was a bit dreamy, thinking of this in a new way. “What would werefish look like? Like more mermaidish or more fishy…?” she mused out loud, knowing that the girl would likely put in some input as well. Keisha hopped she did, because she was super curious about the whole topic now. “This is what I was wondering myself!” Willow exclaimed with happiness and a little shock. Can this woman read her mind? Oh! That would be so cool! Then again if she could read Willow’s mind then she probably wouldn’t be talking to her in the first place. Unless she was on the same crazy level as Will was, much like her best friend Jacki, then maybe this stranger would approach. Then again Willow never really met anyone that was like her and Jacki. Even her oldest brother, who had similar traits to her, was still not on her level. It was like all the responsibility went to him, the social awkwardness went to the next sibling, and Willow got stuck with the crazy. Or what she referred to as awesome-ness. Because clearly only awesome people act like this and don’t’ get locked up in a prison cell or a loony-bin. Despite what her brothers say about her future, Willow can see herself being very successful and prison-free in the future! “Well that’s good!” exclaimed Willow and then quickly added, “Well not good that you have run into creepy people but good that I’m not considered really creepy.” Yea, make sense out of that! It probably sucked meeting creepy people; actually it did suck to meet creepy people. Will has met her fair share of creeps over the years. Between Dallas trips, high school parties, college parties, and trips to Seattle, she has met a ton of creepy people. But they were all quite interesting in their own. Fascinating really. Willow was always interested in how people worked and how to deal with them. Of course she never took candy from strangers, left her drink alone at a party, or went home with a stranger. She didn’t find people that interesting, they certainly were not worth her life or whatever they could possibly rob her of.
Will could just imagine this gorgeous woman saying hi to Ethan and him grunting in response like an idiot. Okay when an Abercrombie looking person says hi to you, you say hi back. At the very least! This is why her brother was still hopelessly single. He didn’t hit on girls like this! He wasn’t a bad looking guy; after all he was related to her and Dylan. They were good-looking humans, thanks to their wonderful genes. So it didn’t’ shock Willow that someone as beautiful as Keisha said hit to him, it was a shock that he probably didn’t even respond like the moron he is. This is why you have no friends, Ethan! Will was completely different from her brother and would probably end up with a family before he even goes out on a date. “No he’s not, which is why he’s terribly single and will probably have to resort to eHarmony soon.” Actually Willow will probably have to resort to eHarmony with Jacki in secret for her brother. He really wasn’t that bad, not compared to some brothers; I guess he had a mysterious nature to him. But in Willow’s mind, he was nothing like her…so clearly he wasn’t THAT awesome.
The Texan girl took Keisha’s hand and shook it once. She had noticed that it was incredibly hot. Not like ‘oh your hand is so hot and gorgeous!’. More like ‘you’re hand it really hot, you should probably put some ice on it to cool it down’. “Yup that’s me! Willow Carmichael! I swear I’m more fun than my brother.” She introduced herself, amusement in her voice, before she attempted a slight bow. “Do you have any siblings?” Willow didn’t want to pry, she wasn’t about to ask her for names. But she was curious if that girl had to share her genes with another human being as well. It was interesting to find people with other siblings. Especially when she found other people with brothers, because than they could possibly know her pain. Of course then it would depend if the person was the oldest or youngest. If they were the oldest then they certainly wouldn’t be on Willow’s level, unless they were clinically insane.
“I’m not really sure…” Willow stated thoughtfully. She really didn’t think THAT far on that topic of werefish. “Probably fishy when you think about it. If they looked like mermaids then they would be considered mermaids and mermaids are completely different from werefish. I can imagine like human turning it a very pretty fish, but be a little bigger than normal fish. Almost the size of a shark! And, like, their colors would depend on their personalities and everything!” Yea, she didn’t think that much about werefish. Honestly. That was all on the spot, pretty good for a girl that was only in her freshmen year of college. Especially good since fiction wasn’t something she planned on specializing in school. She was looking more at music and psychology. Nothing that would help fuel her imagination in the least. Well music probably could, since music practically inspired to do everything she has done in her life.
